13 | Thursday, June 6, 2013 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com The Bagel House boasts authentic Montreal-style bagels The Bagel House on Lakeshore Road in Port Credit, is home to a dozen different types of Montreal-style bagels. Varieties including sesame, caraway, cinnamon, raisin, flax seed and pumpernickel owe their exceptional flavour to the owners' knowledge of creating authentic Montreal-style bagels. Owners Sat Chouhan and Jessie Sahdra are from India, by way of Montreal, where they learned to make the bagels for which the city is known. Now Brampton residents, the owners started in the business from the ground up. After emigrating from India, they began as cleaners at the famous Fairmount and St. Viateur bagel bakeries in Montreal. Over the years, they moved up to rollers, bakers, and eventually were put in charge of managing the bakeries. They now have three stores in Toronto running 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Chouhan and Sahdra decided the time was right to open their fourth store, in Port Credit. "People from Mississauga and Oakville were driving to Toronto to buy our bagels, so we knew a store would work in Mississauga," said Chouhan, who opened the new location last July. "We've gotten a very warm welcome in Port Credit, better than we expected," Eventually, the owners want to be open around the clock but Chouhan says that will require some time. The Toronto locations are open 24 hours and sell 500-600 dozen bagels daily. The bagels are made using water, flour, sugar, eggs and oil with no shortening. They are hand-rolled and boiled in honey water, providing a crunchy-sweet exterior and baked in a wood-burning brick oven fuelled by maple logs. Additionally, The Bagel House offers meats, cheese and salads in the deli by the pound. Chicken, spinach and potato knish along with chicken and vegetable samosas are sold individually or in six pieces. Desserts such as turnovers, strudels and chocolate rugelach are also part of the menu. At The Bagel House, you experience an authentic Montreal-style bagel bakery and deli. Customers can eat inside, take their food to go or sit at the tables outside the store. The Bagel House is located at 235 Lakeshore Rd. E in Port Credit and is open seven days a week from 7 a.m.-10 p.m. Call 905891-9696 or visit www.thebagelhouse.com for more information.
