"Connected to your Community" Online marathon aims to raise cash for MS Society For the second year, Oakville's Phil Marlatt and his friends will be skateboarding, shooting hoops, driving tanks and taking down bad guys, all in the hopes of collecting some coins for the Halton chapter of the Multiple Sclerosis Society. Of course, this is all happening in the virtual gaming world of Nintendo. Marlatt and his pals started their 100-hour marathon of playing original NES games yesterday (Wednesday) at noon and will continue to Sunday (June 9) at 4 p.m. "Anyone who's interested, can watch us online during the marathon. We'll be streaming footage of the gamers as they play, as well as the TV screen, so our audience can see it all happening," Marlatt said in a press release. Those watching online will also be able to sponsor the fundraising gamers directly on the website (http://nesathon.blogspot.ca) as well as chat with them and submit game requests -- Marlatt boasts a collection of more than 700 Nintendo games to accommodate most requests. Last year, the group raised more than $2,500 for the cause and is hoping to surpass that total this year. All funds raised during the gaming marathon will go towards support services for people living with MS in Halton, as well as fund research to find a cause and cure for the disease. The annual Crohn's and Colitis Foundation of Canada (CCFC) fundraiser supports improving the quality of life for children and adults living with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). "One in 150 Canadians lives with IBD, and we know that number is growing," Dr. Kevin Glasgow, CCFC CEO, said in a news release. Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, collectively known as IBD, is a group of disorders caused by an abnormal response of the body's immune system causing the intestines to become inflamed and ulcerated. Formerly the Heel `n' Wheel-a-thon, the Gutsy Walk started in 1996 in 24 Canadian communities and has grown to 57 nationwide. Organizers hope to top the $2.8 million raised last year. The local walk for Halton will take place at the gazebo at Spencer Smith Park in Burlington, 1400 Lakeshore Rd.
