Local cadet earns Duke of Edinburgh award Oakville Cadet Chief Warrant Of cer Nathan McCabe was recently presented with the gold level of the Duke of Edinburgh's Award. McCabe, 18, will of cially receive the mark of distinction at a ceremony in Ottawa from Prince Edward, or in his absence, the Governor General of Canada, David Johnston next fall. In March 2007 at age 12, McCabe joined the 1188 Lorne Scots Royal Canadian Army Cadet Corps and has risen to the top of the ranks. "Nathan is an exceptional cadet and over the past two years has been the cadet unit's Regimental Sergeant Major. He has truly taken on the responsibility of a leader, role model, mentor and a key member of the 1188 Lorne Scots RCACC operational team," stated a press release. The Duke of Edinburgh's Award can be earned at the bronze, silver or gold levels. McCabe has been previously presented with the bronze level of the award -- each of the awards demands the participant attain a prescribed level of skill, tness, community service and the completion of an organized adventure journey. During his career as a cadet, McCabe has provided the Oakville community with hundreds of volunteer hours and received numerous awards, presented to him by his unit, also earn- photos by Steven Der-Garabedian ­ special to the Beaver ing his National Star Certi cation, a comprehensive challenge offered to army cadets. In 2011, he achieved the rank of Cadet Master Warrant Of cer. The same year he was appointed the unit's Regimental Sergeant Major and presented with the Royal Canadian Legion Medal of Excellence. McCabe became Cadet Chief Warrant Of cer in February, followed by successfully completing the cadet Pre-Para course. Competing at a national level, he was then selected to participate in the Canadian Forces Parachute Quali cation Course to take place this summer.
