Sports Briefs The Oakville Aquatic Club member turned in a near personal-best time of two minutes, 2.56 seconds in the men's 200-metre individual medley to take third place. That was just shy of the 2:02.38 time he posted at the world championship trials in April. "To get near my personal best time when I'm not fully prepared is very satisfying," the 17-year-old said. "My dives were deeper off the start and my stroke rate was higher for the backstroke and freestyle. It's a great experience racing at this competition." The meet included many Olympic swimmers who used it as a tune-up for the world championships. "He's been building toward this," said national junior coach Ken McKinnon. "We were hoping to see another improvement today and he put himself in position to win a medal. There was a significant drop between his morning and night (swims)." White also turned in a 12th-place finish in the 200m butterfly. Shepley close second at CN Tour Ontario stop A bogey-free final round of 5-under 66 was not quite enough to earn Jessica Shepley the victory at this week's CN Canadian Women's Tour Ontario stop in Windsor. The Oakville golfer was edged in a playoff by Alameda, Calif. native Emily Childs, who made birdie on the third extra hole to clinch her first professional title. The two players were tied at 8-under after two rounds. Shepley, who recently returned to golf after a brief retirement, earned just under $7,000 for her runnerup finish. RIT Tigers add Stenason to defence corps The Rochester Institute of Technology Tigers women's hockey team will rely heavily on Oakville players to defend its goal next season. Lindsay Stenason will join Lindsay Grigg on the Tigers' blueline next year in front of netminder Ali Binnington. Grigg and Binnington are both going into their junior seasons. Stenason has played the last two years with the Oakville Hornets of the Provincial Women's Hockey League. She had four goals and eight assists in 36 games with the Hornets last season. After winning the NCAA Division III title in 2012, RIT held its own after making the jump to Division I this past campaign. The Tigers, coached by Oakville native Scott McDonald, finished the season with a record of 16-16-5 and were edged 2-1 in overtime by Syracuse in the semifinals of the College Hockey America tournament.
