Going into this season, the school had never even reached a tournament final. Burloak paddlers named to national, provincial teams Eight Burloak Canoe Club paddlers have secured spots on CanoeKayak Canada's world championship teams following a three-day regatta last weekend in Welland. At the senior world championships, four-time Olympic medallist Adam van Koeverden will join Burloak teammate Brady Reardon in the men's K-2 (kayak doubles) 1,000-metre event, while Rob Clarke will be on the men's K-4 1,000m team. Mark Oldershaw, who earned bronze at last year's Olympics in London, will compete in the men's C-1 (canoeing singles) 1,000m, and Jamie Andison and Mark Klevinas will be part of the men's C-4 1,000m team. Under-23 world championship qualifiers include Taylor Potts (women's C-2 500m) and Clarke (men's K-4 1,000m). Jeremy Stott (men's C-2 1,000m) will compete in the junior world championships. Other notable performers at trials included Alanna Bray-Lougheed (eighth in women's K-1 200m, sixth in women's K-1 500m), Cory Rublee (third in men's C-1 200m) and Aaron Rublee (fifth in men's C-1 200m). The national team selections came on the heels of provincial trials earlier this month, when six Burloak athletes qualified for Ontario's Canada Games Team. Josh Havin, Jillian Perrone, Abigail Haines, Potts, Stott and Bray-Lougheed will represent Ontario at the Games. The team recently finished a campaign that included championships in five of six tournaments entered as well as a 29-game unbeaten streak. Significant tournament victories included titles at invitationals hosted by St. Andrew and St. Marguerite, and the Loyola Cup. Ironically, the one tournament Pope John Paul failed to win this season was the one it hosted May 28, when a last-minute goal resulted in a semifinal loss to St. Andrew. Daniel Bustamante, Christian Lopac, Anthony Taylor and Rafael Valentini tallied in the final of the St. Andrew tournament, when Pope John Paul blanked St. Marguerite 4-0. At the St. Marguerite tournament, Lopac and Valentini scored goals in the last two minutes of the final against St. Andrew, forcing a shootout that Pope John Paul won with a goal by Taylor. Gianfranco Mirto, Michaelangelo Mirto and Bustamante scored goals to give Pope John Paul a 3-0 win over St. Bernadette in the Loyola Cup final. Nicolas Noblecilla and Lopac had markers in Pope John Paul's semifinal loss to St. Andrew at the Pope John Paul tourney. Also contributing to the team's success this season were Daniel Montus, Josh Spano, Ethan Ioanidis, Matthew Barker, Nathan Chang, Carson Kennard, Matthew Lopez, Taylor Marcos, Anthony Marceau, Jacob Resendes, Philip Travado and Jack Turchet. The club was coached by Matthew Aslett and Nic Bruno, and Anthony Ceelen was the manager.
