Now, people will have a chance to see the local art lover's heritage through an exhibit at the centre, located at 1086 Burnhamthorpe Rd. E. The Calverley ­ Rampen Family Legacy exhibit runs from Saturday (Aug. 3) to Sept. 8 with an opening tea party this Sunday. Calverley is Rampen's maiden name. "It all started in 1799 and I didn't even know I had any of this stuff," Rampen said, who is fifth generation at the upcoming exhibit. "It was in an attic in an old wooden trunk, a lot of it... The other stuff is either inherited, or found and suddenly I put it all together and suddenly it's seven generations of artists. It's quite an interesting story." The exhibit features 200 years and seven generations of the Calverley/Rampen family and their body of work. Five of those generations lived in Oakville over the past century. The first generation artist in the exhibit is Anthony Salvin, Rampen's great-great-grandfather who was born in 1799. The architect has restored Windsor Castle, the Tower of London and Durham Cathedral, and designed other castles and more than 350 buildings. In the next generation of the Calverley family (Rampen's grandparents), one person has published books on the flora and fauna of Central America and has handdrawn maps of Guatemala that were later used by Darwin in his travels. Rampen's great-grandmother's paintings of the Temple of Seti I were sponsored by the Rockefeller family. Another member of the family was a poetfarmer and veteran of Gallipoli Campaign (1915-1916) who discovered art at the age of 66. Rampen said she inherited the trunks filled with early generations of her family's belongings when her aunt died. The squirrelchewed trunks lay dormant inside a cupboard in a pigeon loft for 25 years after the death of Rampen's aunt, before the contents were discovered. "In these trunks were nine letters from Darwin, drawings by Anthony Salvin, the very famous architect of the 19th century, and naturalists and cleaner bills and gas bills. I'm still sorting it," she said. "It's like Aladdin's cave basically." The folks at the gallery call it a miracle that these items have survived wars and time and are a genealogy treat. Rampen hopes people realize their inherent art abili- ties when they come and see the show. "It's an important thing to talk about the art gene in people," she said. "Most people say, `I can't draw a straight line.' But art is a very important facilitator and balancer so I'm trying to help people to realize: `look into your cupboard.'"
