Mental Health Week Oct. 6 Mental Illness Awareness Week begins Sunday, Oct. 6. Put on by the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA) Halton branch, the annual national public education campaign is designed to "help open the eyes of Canadians to the reality of mental illness and reduce the stigma that still surrounds mental health," stated a press release. "One in five Canadians will experience a form of mental illness at some point in their lives." As part of the campaign, CMHA Halton is hosting three events: · A safeTALK workshop is scheduled for Monday, Oct. 7 at the Holiday Inn and Conference Centre, 3063 South Service Rd., in Burlington, from 1-4:30 p.m., cost is $30 per person or $25 for students and seniors · Another workshop will take place on Thursday, Oct. 10 at the Best Western Plus Inn and Conference Centre, 161 Chisholm Dr., in Milton, from 6-9:30 p.m., cost is the same · Hope Prevails presentation featuring Bill MacPhee, founder of SZ Magazine, a publication on living with schizophrenia. MacPhee was diagnosed with schizophrenia at the age of 24. The presentation will take place on Tuesday, Oct. 8 from 7-9 p.m. at the River Oaks Community Centre, 2400 Sixth Line, in Oakville. The event is hosted in partnership with the Schizophrenia Society of Ontario.
