Every year, during Peace Week (Nov. 1623), YMCAs across Canada celebrate the work being done to build more peaceful communities. As part of the celebration, the YMCA of Oakville awards medallions to individuals and groups who give back to the community, provide leadership to a cause or stand up for the rights of others. The deadline for this year's nominations is Oct. 25. Last year, YMCA Peace Medallions -- along with a $500 bursary -- were given to Emma and Julia Mogus of Books with No K a r a s t a n A r e a R u g s eracy and education. The bursary went directly towards paying shipping invoices for some of the books sent over -- to day, the organization has shipped more than 25,000 books to First Nation communities across Ontario and to some orphanages in Ghana and Uganda. · Jodi Frers, Jack's mom, said the $500 bursary awarded to Jack's Lemonade went towards funding a research bench at the new Toronto Sick Kids Research Institute. · The YMCA Peace Medallion has helped increase the awareness of InvisAbilities as an organization and the issues it supports. The bursary helped fund promotional materials and the maintenance of the organization's website.
