The longtime Oakville resident decided he wanted to help others, so he got himself a mini snowplow truck. He is on-call to clear windrows -- the mound of usually heavy snow at the end of the driveway created after the town plows clear the roads. And Simpson doesn't ask for anything in return. But for those who insist, he suggests a donation to the May Court Club of Oakville. The club, established in 1956, is a women's organization that raises funds and serves others in the community. It runs a lunch program, scholarship program and performs educational puppet shows at local schools. "My wife is involved with the club and very involved with Big Brothers/Big Sisters. I thought I wanted to do something too," Simpson said. "I am having a great time. The looks on people's faces when I show up is just wonderful." Simpson, who had some heart trouble last year and has a 120-foot driveway to clear, started thinking about what his neighbours -- many of them seniors -- do to clear their snow. He got a call from a family who had just moved from Texas and had never seen a flake of snow. When pressed for how to compensate him, Cullen told the family to donate to the May Court Club. He convinced another woman to look into volunteering with the club. Simpson helped out resident Leslie Cochrane last week and she witnessed him helping another family in need. "A family with a new baby who had recently moved from China. The father had a fever and his wife was looking after the baby so it was a coincidence Cullen was there and turned out to be helpful for them," Cochrane said. "My neighbour came over to mention how grateful he was the next day. I imagine that they have a good impression of Canadian generosity of spirit due to Cullen's efforts." During and after a snowfall, Simpson is on-call for residents of the Morrison, Ford and Old Oakville areas for residents in need of help to clear the bottom of their driveways.
