Moving forward always comes with changes continued from p.6 munity mailboxes and experience working with our community placing them where they are convenient for access. It is also because 60 per cent of the homes in Oakville (34,000) already get their mail at community mailboxes, one of the highest percentages in Canada. Recently, Canada Post officials contacted and met with Mayor Rob Burton to consult with him about the process of establishing the remaining community mailboxes in Oakville. It is a disservice to residents to simply say mail is a federal jurisdiction -- as are cellular towers. This does not serve Oakville well. A superb example of the kind of proactive federal-municipal cooperation Oakville needs has been the leadership of Councillors Cathy Duddeck and Pam Damoff, who championed Town council in passing an interim protocol on radio communications towers, which has been very helpful to me in Parliament. For more than a year, I have fought the battle to get the process for siting cellular towers in Canada changed to empower local residents and municipalities to have more say, with great help from Oakville-based Citizens 4 Safe Technology. In fact, Oakville has been Ground Zero in the cellular tower issue. On Feb. 5, Industry Minister James Moore announced a new powerful new policy for siting cellular towers across Canada, doing exactly that. This is the sort of thing that can be accomplished when local elected officials work with the federal or provincial governments and community groups in a non-partisan way. Every house affected in Oakville will be receiving documents outlining the changes and asking for customer feedback on community mailboxes. Please fill out the survey and put them in a Canada Post mailbox. I am acutely aware of the needs of disabled, or sick and shut-in residents, who are concerned they may not be able to get their mail, especially in bad weather. So far I haven't come across anyone who doesn't have a neighbour, friend, or family member who can't drop off their mail. But I intend to work with Canada Post and municipal officials to make sure everyone in Oakville is able to receive their mail. I would like to hear all concerns in this matter.
