Cash available in Kerr Village community improvement plan by Julia Le Oakville Beaver Staff 5 | Thursday, March 20, 2014 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com Kerr Village could potentially be revamped thanks to a new pilot project approved by Oakville's Planning and Development Council earlier this year. A recent Town of Oakville press release revealed more details about the community improvement plan for Kerr Village. It includes a building façade improvement grant to provide property owners and tenants within the Kerr Village area with finan- cial assistance to improve the exterior appearance of buildings and storefronts. "This is a very exciting time for Kerr Village and for Oakville," said Mayor Rob Burton. "Community improvement plans allow the Town to work with business and property owners to find ways of enhancing their surroundings, and creating greater opportunities for economic growth. This grant is one incentive to make improvements possible in a way that reinforces the Town's commitment to creating a more livable Oakville." The grant is available to existing commercial, office and mixed-use buildings located south of Speers Road that have a building façade directly facing Kerr Street or Lakeshore Road. The Town will dole out up to $10,000 for projects that include cleaning or painting building façades, modifying entrances to include accessibility ramps, installing or repairing exterior lighting, awnings or canopies and repairing or replacing windows, doors, cornices and other architectural features. Façades on corner buildings, which face side streets, may also be considered. Corner properties can apply to receive up to $12,500. Town staff describe the plan as a tool in the Planning Act that allows municipalities to look at areas throughout the community, such as emerging growth areas or downtown main street districts, which could be improved by maintenance, rehabilitation, development or redevelopment. Donkeys join religious celebration Residents interested in living a piece of the bible are invited to attend St. Cuthbert's Anglican Church, 1541 Oakhill Dr., on Sunday, April 13 for a Palm Sunday procession with donkeys. The event begins at 10 a.m., outside on the east lawns where members of the congregation, visitors and the choir will gather around a large processional cross. After palms are blessed and distributed, the service will continue with a procession towards the front doors of the church while people sing, `Sing, Hosanna to the servant King.' The procession is intended to reenact Jesus entering the city of Jerusalem on the back of a donkey 2,000 years ago. In this spirit, the St. Cuthbert's procession will include two live donkeys from the Donkey Sanctuary of Guelph. All are welcome to join in this public act of worship and are asked to come early in order to find parking. While the service begins at 10 a.m., anyone wishing to visit with the animals is asked to arrive by 9:30 a.m. For more information, visit www. stcuthbertoakville.ca.
