"Oh no," thought Ranger coach Paul Rowan. But in the blink of an eye, Oakville goalie Kaden Thomson-Hill slid across the crease to block the shot headed for the open net with his pad. The puck was quickly cleared and shortly after, the ice was littered with blue, red and white gloves as the Rangers celebrated their second championship in as many years. For a team that had dominated in Tri-County play, outscoring its opponents 148-28 during a 260-2 season, the Rangers showed they were capable of winning close games as well. After a 3-0-2 start to the season with ties against Burlington and Guelph -- teams the Rangers would later face in the OMHA playdowns -- Oakville finished the season with 23 consecutive wins and then swept Burlington in three games in the first round. After Oakville took the opener of the semifinal series, Guelph edged the Rangers 3-2 to even the series, snapping Oakville's league and playoff win streak at 27. Rowan said the loss didn't affect the team, though. "We had been in a couple of tournaments and lost in the final," The Oakville novice AA Rangers won the OMHA championship, defeating Whitechurch-Stouffville in five games, capped by a 2-1 win Sunday. "A lot of the core guys were back from last year and they never let go of that winning attitude." Oakville came back to win the next two games, 3-0 and 2-1, to advance to the final. "Guelph always gave us fits," Rowan said. "Guelph, at our age, doesn't have AAA, so most of those players will be playing AAA next year. They have a girl who's a great goaltender and three or four guys above the skill level for our league, but we were able to shut those kids down." Rowan said it was the same situation with Whitechurch-Stouffville. "I figure we beat two pretty good AAA teams," he said. The difference, he said, was depth. "All three of our (forward) lines could score and pass well and we just rolled them. A lot of teams stacked their lines against us but in my opinion, we just outworked them," Rowan said. "Our defence was fantastic. During the season we were outshooting teams 28-7. The goalies didn't get a lot of work but as we met tougher teams, our goalies stood the test. Cole Stevens was great over the last couple of months and Kaden played the best game I've seen him play in the final." Atom DS Hornets win Leaside tourney After opening the tournament with a 1-0 loss to the hosts, the Oakville atom DS Hornets posted three straight shutouts to reach the final of the Leaside March Break Hockey Tournament. In the final, the Hornets again allowed a goal in a rematch with Leaside, but this time scored five of their own to take home the championship. Following the loss to Leaside, the Hornets rolled over Clarington 9-0, edged Ancaster 1-0 and blanked Durham West 2-0.
