St. Andrew repeated as girls' champions, finishing an undefeated campaign with a 24-19 victory over Burlington's Sacred Heart. Our Lady of Peace won its first HCDSB boys' basketball title in 17 years with a 38-29 victory, also over Sacred Heart. Hannah Temple and Fiorella Granda led the way offensively for St. Andrew in the girls' final, something they've done all season according to coach Chris Hundt. "We just happen to have those two stellar players, and then we have a nice group around them that complemented the team defensively," said Hundt, who was also pleased with the efforts of Brianne Davis, Victoria Trojko and Lauren Taylor in the final. Also helping the Avengers win two tournaments, the Oakville championship and the Halton title this season were Cassandra Doria, Olivia Ramano, Claudia Bagdanowicz, Haley Montague, Madison Seaver, Haley Hughes, Caileigh Tomas, Aleshia Tomas, Yoo Rim Lee and Sophia Lombardo. Hayley Bowles-Epp and Jessica Garvey were the club's assistant coaches. "The whole team contributed during the season to the team's success," Hundt said. In the boys' final, Callum Baker scored 23 of OLP's 38 points, but the Thunder wasn't able to open up a comfortable lead until Brian Bowman scored eight consecutive points in the third quarter. "Callum was our leading scorer throughout the season and always put up a lot of points," said OLP coach Rob Brennan, "but another key player stepped up almost every game to help us out." Other members of the Thunder were Emmett Serensits, Carlo Marchese, Steven Hospital, JustUs Vasilakos-McRae, Christian Bachoumis, Wil Yamka, Anthony Colaiacovo, Michael Bowman, Aaron MacPherson and Victor Vargatu. "(Our) principal and the boys' parents were very supportive throughout the year, and this was helpful in winning the championship for the OLP community," Brennan said. -- Jon Kuiperij The term `header' will have a whole new meaning this season at Oakville Soccer Club. OSC announced Wednesday that it has added former Toronto Maple Leafs sport psychologist Dr. Paul Dennis to its technical staff. Dennis will consult with the club's age-group head coaches on a variety of topics, ranging from elite-player development to concussion management. "We'll talk philosophy, how you deal with kids, how kids should be coached now as opposed to 20 years ago," said OSC executive director Dave Harris. "We want this to be the bext experience possible for every single person who Paul Dennis comes in here." Dennis worked 20 years for the Maple Leafs, serving mainly as a player development coach who assisted athletes and coaches with their mental preparedness. He is currently a professor lecturing in sports psychology at York University, where Dennis is high-performance coach to the Lions' varsity teams. Dennis's other experience includes serving as head coach of the Ontario Hockey League's Toronto Marlboros and the sport psychologist for Canada's world junior hockey teams in 2002-03 and the national sledge hockey team in 2012-13. He was a featured presenter at the 2010 IIHF/Hockey Canada Summit and an advisor to the Canadian Hockey League's Champions Program. Dennis, who has also worked with the National Basketball Association's Toronto Raptors and Major League Soccer's Toronto FC, is a member of the American Psychological Association and the Association for Psychological Science. He is a published author in sports psychology journals and textbooks. "Bringing on Paul is a real coup for us. His experience is second to none," Harris said. "It's an investment (by us), but also an investment he's made to us... For him to make a commitment to us is fantastic. I'm thrilled. I couldn't be happier about this." The outdoor soccer season is scheduled to begin early next month. Registration is currently open for youth and adult house league programs.
