The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday February 20, 2002 - D3 Series shocker: Blades ousted in four games By Sarah Elliott ' SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER The Oakville Blades reached great heights this season. In the post season, however, they learned just how fast and painful a fall can be. From missing the playoffs last year and squeaking through in eighth place the previ ous year, the Blades exploded, this season, all the way up to a three-way tie for first place with 71 points in the western confer ence of the provincial junior A league. While sporting winning records over the other two first-place teams (the Hamilton Kilty B's and Brampton Capitals) as well as fewer losses, the Blades ended up on the short end of the stick in the tiebreaker for mula (based on most wins), settling for third place, and drawing the Georgetown Raiders. Sure. Georgetown were the sixth-place team, but they boasted a winning record and were solidly in the western conference's sec ond tier of teams with 52 points, just behind Milton (5th) at 54 points and Bramalea (4th) at 55 points. And they turned out to be more than ready for the Oakville Blades, completing a surprising sweep of the Blades, winning games three and four on the weekend -- 5-3 on Friday and 5-2 on Saturday. Ironically, the other two first-place teams were also involved in sweeps -- secondplace Hamilton over seventh-place Mississauga Chargers (who had 44 points), and first-place Brampton annihilating Streetsville (who had 37 points). Certainly, there were few fans who could times, not playing with their usual tenacity. have foreseen the Blades being involved in the wrong end of a sweep. And Georgetown was sure to take advantage After a tentative 2-4 start to the regular of the Blades' penalties, scoring two power season, evoking memories of the previous play goals on Friday night and one on Saturday. two years, they suddenly hit critical mass and started burning up the league.
