Oakville opened the 2014 campaign Friday with a 9-2 rout of the Mimico Mountaineers at Oakville's Toronto Rock Athletic Centre, then scored eight unanswered goals in the second period Sunday to defeat the host Newmarket Saints 15-8. Andrew Kew and Robert Hudson paced the Buzz attack in the two games. Kew had four goals in the season opener, then exploded for 10 points (six goals, four assists) Sunday. Hudson scored a goal and added four helpers Friday, and earned seven more points (four goals, three assists) in Newmarket. Ancaster runner wins overall title at Mercedes-Benz Oakville 10K Ancaster resident John Erik Rasmussen was the overall champion of this year's Mercedes-Benz Oakville 10K, held Sunday in south Oakville. Rasmussen won the event's signature race, the 10-kilometre run, with a time of 32:24.6. Milton's Andrew Taylor was second, 2:02.8 off the pace, with London's Justin Hall placing third. Alexander Dos Santos was Oakville's top overall finisher, placing eighth out of 841 runners with a time of 37:27.9 -- the fastest clocking among males age 15-19. Anna Parker of Oakville posted the fastest 10K time among women, crossing the line in 41:08.8. Aiden Sholdice (men's under 14), Chris Ziomkiewicz (men's 60-69), Bridget Ball (women's under 14) and Jojo Luel (women's 15-19) were other local age division winners. The 5K run was won by Oakville resident Tyler Chacra, whose time of 16:37.2 was comfortably ahead of second-place finisher David Watson (17:22.1), also of Oakville. Tanya Hewson of Burlington placed first among women with a time of 19:03.8. Michael Antifaoff (men's under 14), Watson (men's 15-19), Ben Nelson (men's 30-39), Stephen Brown (men's 50-59), Flemming Galberg (men's 60-69), Olivia Gardiner (women's under 14), Amanda Grice (women's 15-19), Janet Suchanek (women's 50-59) and Veronica Marsden (women's 60-69) were Oakville residents to win age divisions in the race, which attracted 445 runners. Bolton's Gina Nunes was the fastest of 47 participants in the 10K power walk, while Oakville's Margaret Charlton bested 61 participants in the 5K walk. Jake Nyhuus and Mitchell Bolduc each scored twice versus the Saints, with Corbett adding a single. Sam Neeb drew four assists. Josh Falkenstern earned the goaltending victory in both games for the Buzz. Oakville may get a stiffer test this weekend as it plays a pair of home games at TRAC. The Buzz will entertain one of the league's perennial powers, the Akwesasne Indians, Friday at 7 p.m. The Kahnawake Hunters will visit Oakville two days later for a 3 p.m. start.
