www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Thursday, May 1, 2014 | 40 Five Burloak paddlers named to Canadian World Cup team Relaxed start Five Burloak Canoe Club members have been named to CanoeKayak Canada's team that will compete on the World Cup circuit. All five earned their spots at the Canadian Sprint CanoeKayak team trials in Gainesville, Ga. Leading the way are three World Cup and Olympic veterans, Oakville's Adam van Koeverden and Burlington's Mark Oldershaw and Brady Reardon. Joining them are Paul Bryant and Rob Clarke. Four-time Olympic medallist van Koeverden won the K-1 (kayaking singles) 1,000-metre, extending a decade-long win streak in the event at Canadian trials. "We've got to train and race in this stuff because it can come up at world championships and World Cups," van Koeverden said of the strong headwinds the competitors faced in Georgia. "I have lots of racing coming up so I didn't want to ease into (the season). I think if I can have a really good race at world championships, I can squeeze a medal in K-1 1,000 and I'd like to fight for a medal in K-1 5,000 as well." Oldershaw, an Olympic bronze medallist in London, won the C-1 (canoeing singles) 1,000m and hopes he has set the tone for the upcoming season. "We're heading to Europe for three more World Cups so hopefully that will get me into good racing shape. I want a medal, that's why I'm still racing, still paddling for Canada, is I want to win medals. I want to win races and as many of those as I can," he said. Oldershaw and van Koeverden will compete in the first World Cup this weekend in Milan, Italy. The remaining paddlers will join the team for the World Cups May 16-18 in Racice, Czech Republic and May 23-25 in Szeged, Hungary. The world championships will be held in Moscow in August. Reardon finished second to van Koeverden in the K-1 1,000m and then took first in the K-1 500m, edging Angus Mortimer, who along with Reardon was a member of the Canadian K-4 1,000m crew that finished ninth at the 2008 Olympics. He later teamed up with Philippe Duchesneau of Sherbrooke to win the K-2 1,000m. "We had quite a bit of time to work together in Florida so we felt pretty confident on the line," said Duchesneau. "We just did our race place and no surprises, we just took control and it was a smart race." Bryant finished second in the C-1 1,000m, 2.7 seconds off the pace set by Oldershaw. He also teamed up with Roland Varga to finish second in the C-2 1,000m. Clark and Andrew Jessop were second in the K2 1,000m. Clark was also fourth in both the K-1 500m and 1,000m. helps Pilgrim Wood take control Oakville players pace Patriots in Dudley Hewitt opener Three Oakville players combined for seven points as the Toronto Lakeshore Patriots took their opening game Tuesday at the Dudley Hewitt Cup Central Canadian junior A hockey championships in Wellington, Ont. SERVICE RD. continued from p.39 With the Central (West Oakville) and Holy Trinity Tournament titles already under their belt, the Dolphins punctuated their unbeaten season with a Halton Tier 1 championship victory Thursday night at Milton's Craig Kielburger Secondary School. This marks the school's first-ever basketball title at either the Tier 1 or Tier 2 ranks. Coming out with a more relaxed start than usual -- so as to avoid the foul trouble that almost lost them Lepp in recent playoff action -- Pilgrim Wood would eventually use its size advantage and long-range shooting prowess to go on an 18-2 run midway through the game and upstage Tiger Jeet Singh of Milton 41-33. "Typically we come out fast, but we asked them to hang back a bit tonight and get a feel for the game," explained Horne. "They really came through." A tight, defensive first half saw the lead change hands on half-a-dozen occasions with the teams separated by no more than five points at any one time. But Pilgrim Wood began to work the perimeter and turned an effective half-court press into a handful of successful lay-ups -- leading by as many as 14 points before the Tigers sank three late shots to make the final verdict a little more respectable. "This feels great," said Lepp, who helped the Dolphins pull away with three baskets and a pair of free throws in the third quarter to highlight a team-best 19-point performance. Also standing out with 14 points was Korshikov, while serving as strong two-way sparkplugs were Zorbas and Charmvir Basra. Ibrahim Khan, Jamal Suleiman, Cameron Hayhoe, Tariq Gareau, Noah Dankowich, Umer Bilal, Farhat Noori, Carson Scott, Mourad Fetaih and Nick Lawlor also conributed to the team this season.
