Oakville Literacy Council is accepting donations of books in good condition for its annual used book sale to be held at Queen Elizabeth Park Community and Cultural Centre (QEPCCC) from Thursday, June 5 to Sunday, June 8. Volunteers are accepting book donations at QEPCCC at 2302 Bridge Rd. on Mondays from 10 a.m.-1 p.m., and from 6-9 p.m., Wednesdays from 10 a.m.-1 p.m., Fridays from 6-9 p.m., and Saturdays from 10 a.m. -1 p.m. Small batches of books are also being collected at two Panago Pizza locations (on Cornwall Road and Neyagawa Boulevard) Literacy Council seeks donations for used book sale and at Boston Pizza in Dorval Crossing. Book collection runs throughout May with the last day on Saturday, May 31. On Saturday, May 24, Oakville Literacy volunteers will be at the Whole Foods store on Cornwall Road, filling as many shopping carts and reusable shopping bags as possible with book donations from the public. The event also celebrates Whole Foods choosing Oakville Literacy Council as the beneficiary of its One-Dime-at-a-Time community support program from April-June of this year. Customers who bring their own shopping bags to Whole Foods can ask to donate their usual 10-cent per bag refund to Oakville Literacy. Ann Bowman, volunteer president of Oakville Literacy Council, says the used book drive and sale is a real community builder, giving people an opportunity to recycle their books among their neighbours. While most gently-used books are accepted -- including fiction and non-fiction for both adults and children -- there are a few exceptions. "We're not able to accept textbooks, magazines, encyclopedias or outdated travel, reference and computer books," she said. "They just don't sell. We need to collect as many saleable books as we can to raise the funds we need to provide our services throughout the year." Oakville Literacy Council is a charitable organization helping local adults improve essential skills needed to achieve everyday independence, greater participation in the community, and better opportunities in education and employment. Volunteers provide free one-on-one tutoring in reading, writing, and math skills, as well as small group classes in basic computer skills.
