C4CA still asking power plant siting questions and enquires after Clarkson airshed Re: Gloves come off at all candidates meeting; Hudak says PCs led fight against power plant location, Oakville Beaver, Friday, May 30, 2014. These two articles overlook the facts that the process to locate the plants in Oakville and Mississauga were flawed. It was the correct decision to relocate the plants, and what is important is to have a process in place so that money won't be wasted on badly-sited gas plants in the future. In the first article, it is stated Halton PC candidate Ted Chudleigh says that Oakville Liberal candidate Kevin Flynn supported the location of the gas plant approved in 2009. There is no mention of the private members bill, Bill 8, on the `separation distances of gas-fired power plants' Flynn introduced in 2010. This bill was supported in first and second reading by all parties. Citizens for Clean Air (C4CA) would like to hear all parties' current position on such siting regulations for gas-fired power plants. In the second article, based on Ontario PC leader Tim Hudak's meeting with the editorial board of the Oakville Beaver, he claims `the PC party, specifically Chudleigh, led the fight against the selection of Oakville for a gas-fired power plant... Mike Harris also rallied against it. With the Harris reference, he is apparently referring to the 2003 plant that was to be located on Winston Churchill Drive, which is in Mississauga. Chudleigh, like all local MPPs, agreed in meetings with C4CA, if not in public documents, that the 2009 selection of the Oakville site was flawed. C4CA was strengthened by the support of concerned citizens and local politicians from all parties. According to the second article, Hudak also said that "Flynn should have spoken up earlier... Flynn kept his decision quiet until the very end this cost us almost a billion dollars." If the private members bill, Bill 8, on the separation distances of gas-fired power plants introduced by Flynn had been passed, the Oakville plant, with construction delayed by the Town's lack of approval, would not have been allowed, and a large part of the money to relocate the plant may not have been required. The main problems with the Oakville site were proximity to homes and schools, and location in a stressed airshed. C4CA has continued to meet with Ontario Power Authority (OPA), Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) and members of government over the past year regarding appropriate siting guidelines or regulations for gas-fired power plants. C4CA would like to hear all parties' position on such siting regulations. C4CA has also been participating in the Oakville-Clarkson Air Zone Management Advisory Committee (OCAZMAC), a stakeholders group set up by the Liberal minister of the environment, to improve air quality in the Clarkson airshed by following up on the recommendations in a report by Dr. David Balsillie. C4CA would like to know what all parties would do to improve the air quality in the Clarkson airshed. Special JUNE Postal delivery should be the same for all Re: Oakville joins 50 other municipalities in fight to retain Canada Post door-to-door delivery, Oakville Beaver, May 27, 2014. Having had no door-to-door delivery for more than 30 years, it has always seemed to be a two-tiered system to me. I miss seeing the `mailman' going door-todoor and the sound of cards dropping through the slot. The upside is, if one is away on vacation, one can just leave the mail in the neighbourhood box. Bottom line... as taxpayers we should all be getting the same service... either door-to-door, or `the box.' I do not appreciate the Town of Oakville wasting my tax dollars discussing this now... you didn't do that when we were stuck with no delivery. Stop discussing it now.
