Halton Region will add 37 hectares of forested land to commemorate the 75th anniversary of Halton Regional Forests. The Halton Regional Forests were one of several Agreement Forests in Ontario previously managed by the province's Ministry of Natural Resources. However, as that agreement expired, Halton Region assumed the management of its forests. Now, the acquisition of new lands marks the first addition to the forests in almost 50 years and is intended to protect them for generations, said Regional staff. "Halton Regional council considers sustainability in all that we do in order to protect and preserve the Region's natural heritage," said Regional Chair Gary Carr. "One way we're preserving our natural environment for future generations is by implementing a biodiversity strategy to help protect our forests and the natural heritage systems that connect wildlife and vegetation across our region." In 1939, Carr said, more than 665 hectares of land were acquired as Halton Regional Forests -- spread over 14 separate forest tracts, ranging in size from 12 hectares to more than 166 hectares. Carr said the new forest lands contain a provincially significant wetland (approximately 14 hectares) and a woodlot (approximately 23 hectares), and will bring the total size of Halton's Regional Forests to 702 hectares, more than twice the amount of land making up the Toronto Islands (332 hectares). The new property is next to the Robertson Regional Forest tract in Milton and will connect to 381 hectares of Regional forest. Halton's new Biodiversity Strategy for Halton Regional Forests aims to protect and increase the biological diversity throughout the forests, while preserving and enhancing the Regional Natural Heritage System for future generations. Over the next 10 years, Halton will implement seven biodiversity initiatives to maintain and enhance the biodiversity of the forests including: · Implementing strategic control measures for priority invasive species; · Expanding restoration and enhancement activities beyond tree and shrub planting; · Monitoring the forests' biodiversity; · Promoting Regional forest tracts as living laboratories; · Engaging the public in biodiversity efforts in the Regional forest tracts; · Engaging in public awareness and educational activities to promote biodiversity; and · Continuing to implement good forestry practices in Regional forests.
