_B4 -The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday June 5, 2002 Volunteers life blood of Community Living Volunteers are the life blood of Community Living Oakville. Without Volunteers, the very existence of the organization would he in jeopardy. To receive government funding, it is neces sary to he managed by a volunteer Board of Directors. The Board over sees the direction of the organization, manages the finances, and approves major changes. It is more than just a monthly meeting. Board members sit on various committees supporting staff and individuals requiring assistance in many capacities. From the property committee which helps in the mainte nance of the facilities, to the morale committee which helps the stall' with problems, to the quality of care com mittee which facilitates problem solv ing at all levels, these twelve volunteers are active participants in ensuring qual ity of life for the vulnerable. Volunteers come from the ranks of our staff as well. It was very evident this year just how important volunteers are to the special programs we offer. For five years. Nancy Gilchrist from the semi independent living program organized our participation in the Torch Run. The Torch Run is a fund raiser put on by the Halton Regional Police. The Torch is carried throughout communi ties and ends up in the community spon soring the Special Olympics Spring Games. Nancy has worked diligently to get a host of volunteers to supervise and assist the intellectually challenged individuals we serve to participate as athletes and to carry the Torch. Family commitments prevented Nancy' from carrying on her tradition, and this year. Community Living Oakville did not have a presence in the Torch Run. So we didn't get to run with a torch in town, so what is the big deal? It is a big deal to someone who has limited out side contacts. To someone who traditionally knew there would be crowds cheering, and a hoi dog at the end. the absence of the public praise and excite ment is a major void. Hopefully, next year, the Torch Run w ill find a vol unteer who will help our organization to be present. After all. it is for the Special Olympics and the athletes are the people we happen for C LO . Jadza Landers, through her diligent hard work, organiz es the G olf Day which again this year was a resounding success. Three staff members are speaking at the Ontario Association for Community Living Annual Conference. On their own time, they have written and w ill present a workshop on the effects o f Fetal Alcohol Syndrome. This is the first time, staff members have presented at an Ontario conference. Way to go Mary Jo Nunes. Wendy Charron and Jody Blaauw. Volunteers from the community are especially cherished. They bring a fresh perspective and increase full participa tion within the community. Community volunteers act as Leisure Buddies. Leisure buddies provide social support. If you are a leisure buddy, you may interact with your buddy once or twice a month taking in a special event in Oakville such as the Waterfront Festival or go to a movie. Leisure buddies are facilitators who help expand the social contacts of someone who may have no other outside supports. This program would be a great opportunity for the high school student who needed to ful fill their community volunteer involve ment. It enhances the life of both bud dies. At times the lack of volunteer drivers means that special events which are free can not be accessed. Drivers who could donate time to drive one or more people to special events are needed on an ongo ing basis.
