The group home would have to meet strict safety requirements with firewalls separating bedrooms and kitchen; a sprinkler system; inter connected fire alarms; and, electri cal outlets and lightswitch plates for wheelchair access. Should TASSLE discover that charity doesn't begin at home, at least not to the extent of donations for which Wheeler is hoping, the project will have to rely on fundraising. TASSLE got its start in 2000. Wheeler has worked many hours to secure the agency's charitable status legally. So far. fundraising consists of donations and the raffling of prints, which TASSLE has received from In Kind Canada a group that exists to help charity groups raise money. TASSLE will hold its annual meeting on Tuesday, April 16, at 7:45 p.m. at the Iroquois Ridge Community Centre. "Our organization is working to build and operate a group home for adults with challenges," said Wheeler. Those may include stroke vic tims, people with cerebral palsy, or others with head injuries. Wheeler said the physically challenged need help with every day chores like dressing, eating, and mobility. "Their brains work, they just can't do for themselves," said Wheeler. Tasslehouse would be for adults, aged 18 to 64, but Wheeler envi sions it would house those aged 30 to 40. Group homes also exist for the mentally challenged, said Wheeler. "It's the adult group for which there is a need for group home beds," said Wheeler. Though statistics are hard to come by. Wheeler said there are more than 17,000 physically chal lenged adults in Ontario waiting for group home beds -- approximately 200 in this area. "Sometimes the wait can be 10 years long," said Wheeler. The Oakville resident said a group home wouldn't be hosting wild parties. "A group home would bring people to the community to live in a society and with a support group," she said. Staff, volunteers and family would provide round-the-clock supervision and care in a setting where residents could become part of the community. Wheeler said she has nothing against institutions -- she works in one -- but admitted that connecting with a community can be a little tougher from an institution than from a home. "As good as institu tions are, they tend to be a step removed," she said. "I have a basic interest in help ing these type of people. They give me far more than I give them," said Wheeler. She said often health profession als and volunteers believe they're "going to help" people. "Then you quickly realize that they give you more. They teach you things like patience and long suffer ing. These are people who. often if they want a drink of water or cup of coffee, have to ask for it. It's very, very mutual giving," said Wheeler. "I'd like to do something for people who are waiting without a great deal of hope of securing a room in a house in a community," said Wheeler.
