Karen Newman · Special to the Oakville Beaver OH WHAT A PARTY: Pat Gibbons, chair of Big Sisters of Oakville, was among many who enjoyed the festive atmosphere at the Rattlesnake G olf and Country Club recently as Big Sisters threw a wildly successful M ardi Gras fundraiser that took in $8,000 for the Big Sisters of Oakville. Community Living has come a long way M ay is Community Living Month, a new concept for those with an intellec tual challenge. Fifty year; ago being intellectually challenged was a sentence to be isolat ed. Education was denied. That changed when the Kelley and Gunn fami lies decided their five-year-olds shouldn't be " retired" from V r school. ^ They inde pendently hired a teacher and a tiny school grew to seven children and found a home at St. Jude's Church. By September 1954, the Oakville and District Association for the Mentally Retarded was formed. Fundraising allowed the Association to purchase a school by June 1955. The Kinsmen Club got involved and financially supported the school in May 1957 allowing another school. The intellectually challenged were no longer hidden. O akville Adult Training Centre opened in 1965. June 1967 saw the introduction of sports and evening socials. In 1968, the United Way of Oakville recognized the unique service and financially assisted the Oakville Association for the Mentally Retarded. Support was augmented when the Special Olympics were held and Oakville had two medal winners. The government began to fund com munity based programs for preschoolers and adults. The Oakville Association continued being innovative and responsive. Residences were purchased or leased. Claycrafters began in downtown Oakville: a co-op apartment program began: a second Workshop and Training Centre opened. By 1984, community apartments facilitated further community integration. Changes also occurred in public awareness and attitude. By 1992. the use of the label retard ed was held in disfavor and Community Living Oakville (C LO ) was adopted. Political reality struck and in 1995, funding for two residences was cut. Vocational assessments were phased out. C LO had to engage in cost-cutting meas ures including moving to smaller, cheap er accommodations. C LO training cen tre, located at 1108 Speers Rd. now held the Life Skills. Pre-vocational and Best Pack programs. Fortunately, volunteers from the Ford plant pitched in to paint the main areas to make them more habitable. In March 2000, C LO purchased 301 Wyecroft Rd.. a better work environment. In June 2001, Halton Region took on responsibility for preschoolers. Community Living Oakville now serves only adults. From the vision of two parents to community-wide service in less than fifty years, the changes are monumental. Yet there is still a long way to grow. Community inclusion remains elusive to many. Total integration is the goal. Community Living is living proof that living life honors and accepts those with an intellectual challenge to fully participate.
