Although Hill's sister, Ashley, was diagnosed with a brain tumour at age 20 in Sept. 2008, Hill was told it was not genetic and she did not need to be tested. After requesting an MRI multiple times, Hill was finally given one and her tumour was discovered. Ashley's condition is currently stable, but like her sister must go in for check-ups every six months. "When it hits this close," said Channing, "it's a big wake-up call; how far behind we are in the research and how much we need to donate to make sure this doesn't happen anymore." Wanting to do `something more', Channing decided to not only help organize a team for the upcoming Road Hockey to Conquer Cancer Tournament at Toronto's Exhibition Place on Sept. 27, but to also hold a softball fundraiser Sunday, Aug. 17 to ensure more funds would be raised for the Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation. Along with his cousin Mike Zelek, and with the aid of the Glen Abbey Slo-Pitch League, Channing is putting on the inaugural Softball for Liz fundraiser at Palermo Park, 2345 Dundas St. W., and is expecting more than 100 people to attend. The event, which runs 5-9 p.m., will include a home-run derby and fastest pitching competition, as well as a silent auction and 50/50 draw. "We were looking for a way to expand our participation in the road hockey tournament and raise more money," said Channing. "We're both very involved in Oakville sports and play on a Glen Abbey Slo-Pitch team, so it all kind of fits." "They have already taken on a huge role by participating in the Road Hockey to Conquer Cancer Tournament and organizing this event just shows how they are always going over and beyond to support me and others fighting this battle," she said.
