E-bike rider faces numerous charges following police chase by David Lea Oakville Beaver Staff 3 | Wednesday, August 20, 2014 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com A 46-year-old Oakville man is facing a slew of charges following a police chase involving a modified electric bike, which occurred on Kerr Street Monday night. At around 11:45 p.m., Halton police officers, patrolling on bicycles, saw a man on an E-bike in the area of Kerr Street and Lakeshore Road West who they allege was not wearing the required helmet. When the officers called on the man to stop, he allegedly refused and began riding through traffic lights and stop signs in an attempt to get away. Due to public safety, police broke off the pursuit. However, a short time later, the suspect discarded the E-bike, just north of Speers Road and fled on foot, police said. A man was ultimately located and arrested. Officers said the bike had been modified, so that is was no longer classified as an Ebike, but rather a motor vehicle. Kevin Howland, 46, of Oakville has been charged with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, failing to stop for a police officer, operating a motor vehicle without insurance, failing to properly wear a helmet, and operating a vehicle on a sidewalk amongst other traffic-related offences. Police said the man's licence was also suspended and the E-bike seized and impounded, pending completion of the court process. The accused will appear in a Milton court Saturday (Sept. 23). Modifications Halton police are reminding residents and motorists that any modifications to an E-bike can change the classification of the vehicle so that operating it requires proper registration, licence plates, insurance, and a proper class of driver's licence. Police said a proper helmet is required to be worn and the pedals must be properly affixed to an E-bike at all times. Cyclists and E-bike operators are reminded they must obey the Highway Traffic Act and related bylaws that may exist within their town or city. Crime Stoppers seeks volunteers for upcoming Jail-A-Thon at Oakville Place Crime Stoppers of Halton will be hosting a fundraising Jail-A-Thon at Oakville Place on Saturday, Oct. 4.
