Bronte man eyes Ward 1 seat by Michael Gregory Oakville Beaver Staff 5 | Wednesday, August 20, 2014 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com The Oakville municipal election has captured the political interest of a Bronte resident with experience down at Queen's Park. Sean O'Meara, a constituency office manager for Labour Minister Kevin Flynn, and more recently assistant to Halton MPP Indira Naidoo-Harris, resigned his position within the provincial government to take a run at the Town and Regional Councillor seat for Ward 1. "It gives me some time to focus on the campaign, and focus on what needs to be done, and knock on as many doors as possible and listen to what the people in Ward 1 have Sean O'Meara to say," he said. O'Meara holds a PhD from Queen's University and as a government affairs specialist for Tim Hortons, received a Top 40 Under 40 Business Award in 2013 for his work in the Hamilton-Halton community. The 35-year-old married father of a twoyear-old daughter and eight-month-old son said the lack of progress on the Wyecroft bridge plans, and the need to address the issue of gridlock, influenced his decision to enter the race. "The streets all around our ward are becoming sort of thoroughfares to try to get around the traffic and congestion is just a bit of a nightmare," O'Meara said. "That, combined with living in downtown Bronte, just behind the plaza, I haven't seen any changes in 10 years. I think it's just time that I put my voice forward and offer maybe a different viewpoint on where we should be going." A former nationally-ranked amateur boxer, who represented Canada abroad, O'Meara is currently the Sport Organizing Chair for boxing at the Toronto 2015 Pan/Parapan Am Games. O'Meara was also part of the Halton Trillium Grant Review team before stepping aside to work at Queen's Park. He believes the dialogue between the Town and residents seems to be "one-way" and many of the younger families he's spoken to aren't sure "what council does, or who it is, or what they're up to. "I think the people need to have a little more input and be consulted more. I think that's very important," he said. "That's going to be a priority for me to ensure everybody's got access to influencing council through me. Let me be that voice for everyone and do what's right for the residents of Ward 1."
