The event hits home for Oakville's Ron Newman, volunteer walk co-ordinator, his wife Doris and their family -- Newman is celebrating nine years without dialysis; in 2005, he was the recipient of a kidney transplant. "I would like to say `thank you' to everyone who played a part in me getting to this point in my life," Newman said. "And a special thanks to my ever-loving wife Doris, and our children Karen and Kyle, for being there through this very tough times in our lives." More than 10,000 people in Ontario are on dialysis today and 1,100 are on the wait list for a transplant, stated a press release issued by the Kidney Foundation of Canada. "End-stage kidney failure is a permanent, life-changing diagnosis. Undergoing dialysis treatments numerous times a week takes its toll physically, psychologically, and financially, and can dramatically affect the patient as well as their family and friends." The local Kidney Walk takes place on Saturday, Sept. 20 at Bronte Creek Provincial Park, 1219 Burloak Dr. Registration opens at 10 a.m., followed by the walk at 11 a.m. "Participants in the Kidney Walks will only walk a few kilometres, but each step will provide hope for those touched by kidney disease," stated the release. The Kidney Foundation's goal is to support those affected by kidney disease through education, patient support programs (such as the Kidney Connect Peer Support program), advocacy, and by funding research to improve understanding of kidney disease and its treatments.
