Beamish also produced flyers and marketing materi als to recruit youth to spend March Break at Child Find, using the volunteer hours to build their resumes and learn new skills. "Because of his dedication and support to Child Find Ontario, the youth volunteers cut and pinned over 27,500 green ribbons sent out in May to various community organi zations," said fellow volun teer Darlene Shaw who nom inated him for the award. In addition, Beamish is on the OTHS rugby team, involved with YBC Basketball and competes in snowboard competitions. Squash player Neha Chawla, 14, a Grade 9 student at Appleby College, was awarded for her sport and ath letic achievement. Having played squash for six years, she has participated in more than 100 tournaments. Recently, she was a bronze medallist in the girls' U-15 category at the Junior Squash Nationals in Victoria, BC. She was seeded second in the 19-player draw going into this tournament. However, she has no plans to turn p ro .. "Playing squash is just a part of her life and her strong determination to learn and excel is the driving force behind everything she does, wrote her mother Venu Chawla in nominating her. "She gives o f herself 100% of the time regardless if she is competing in a tourna ment, or school or volunteer ing in the community." Chawla has volunteered to be a program leader for Oakville Parks and Recreation's Summer Sizzler program. Through Appleby, she's volunteered for a women's shelter and a read ing program. The Senior of the Year Award, previously presented at a ceremony held at the Oakville Seniors Recreation Centre, went to 73-year-old Betty Chauvin, a volunteer at Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital. She volunteers in the geri atric department, helps train candy stripers, and provides rides to patients. Chauvin is also a good neighbour, cooking and bak ing for other tenants in the senior's apartment building where she lives, in addition to offering rides. And, she knits afghans and donates them to various organizations for raf fles, and makes smaller afghans for other seniors. She also knits hats and mitts for the homeless and collects clothing for a women's shel ter. At age 68, she retired as an addictions counsellor after working at a men's group home in Toronto for 20 years. "This longtime Oakville resident who has had a life time of working for charitable organizations and helping others, has a favourite saying, `I'll say a little prayer for you tonight," ' said her nominator and neighbour, Marlee Herron. "I, like many seniors in Oakville, am thankful that she includes me." Unis Lumin Inc., repre sented by John Breakey, pres ident and CEO, received the Community Connections Award. The technology solutions company participates in the Oakville Chamber of Commerce, Sheridan College, industry councils and community events. The company is one of the founders of the Community Connections program with Oakville Parks and Recreation, and since 2000, has contributed over $6,000 to department initiatives. Model Air Show on Sunday at Drumquin The Oakville Model Flying Club will hold its seventh annual Air Show in support o f the Fareshare Foodbank on Sunday June 23. The show will be held at Drumquin Park on Britannia Road west of Trafalgar Road, from 12:30 - 3 p.m., weather permitting. There is no rain date but the public is welcome at the field on evenings and weekends during the flying season through out the spring and summer. The show will feature displays and flying of a variety of model aircraft - trainers, warbirds, electric power, gliders, combat, rockets. There will also be a performance by the Royal Canadian Air Force Cadets 540 Squadron band. Snacks and drinks will be available. After the show, the public is invited to fly train ers under the guidance and supervision o f instructors. They are Donald MacMullen and Samantha Young. MacDonald, 16, participated in the Red Cross Youth Council, volunteered for a summer camp and Sunday School, took a canoe trip on Manigoragan River in Napiming Provincial Park in Manitoba, successfully completed two courses in swimming instruction and lifesaving, and enjoys rollerblading, swimming, hockey, soccer, snowboarding and whitewater rafting. Young, 17, volunteered as a candy striper at a hospital, canoed through Algonquin Park, achieved Grade 8 piano with honours at the Royal Conservatory of Music, and enjoys ten nis and swimming.
