The num bers from this y ear's event are being tallied to determ ine by how m uch the festival w ill exceed the $1 m il lion m ark in funds given back to the com m unity, a figure that w as reached on the festival's 10th anniversary last year. The 12th O akville W aterfront Festival has already been scheduled for June 20, 21, and 22, 2003. Celebrating its 20th anniversary, the ATHENA Award has been presented to over 3,500 individuals who have excelled in their chosen field, given back to their com m unity and m ost importantly, m entored w om en to achieve their full potential. B ack in 1981, M artha M ayhood M ertz w as the only w om an on the board o f her local cham ber o f com m erce. She also discovered that only one aw ard in 75 years had been pre sented to a w om an in recognition o f her leadership contribu tion. D eterm ined to celebrate and foster w om en's leadership, M ertz founded the ATHENA Award Program. Today, the ATHENA Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to prom oting leadership opportunities for w om en, m anages the ATHENA Award Program in 350 cities across North America. In Oakville, the A THENA Award Program is in its sixth year. Previous recipients are M ayor A nn M ulvale, Laura K upferschm idt, A nne Day, Patricia D illon and K athryn Parke. W ell-respected by their peers, A THENA Award recipients have achieved professional excellence - in their career or business.
