A special highlight of the week is the presentation of YMCA Peace Medallions to individuals or groups who, without any special resources, demonstrate a commitment to peace through contributions made within their local, national or global community. Nominations are now open to select one youth, adult and group in Oakville who has made significant contributions for promoting and inspiring PEACE: Participation, Empathy, Advocacy, Community and Empowerment. YMCA Peace Medallion recipients will be honoured with a medallion as well as a $500 award to contribute towards their charitable work. This year's ceremony will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 19 and will feature keynote speaker Kirk Smalley of the anti-bullying organization, Stand for the Silent. Smalley was the subject of the 2012 documentary, Bully, after his son committed suicide as a result of being bullied at school. Tickets for the YMCA Community Breakfast for Peace will be available online starting on Sept. 21, International Day of Peace, for $25 per person or $220 per table. "The recipient of the YMCA Peace Medallion is a tremendous inspiration and they demonstrate how any one of us can improve the quality of life in our local, national or global community. They exemplify the values of YMCA Peace Week and the positive impact just one person can make," says Kyle Barber, president and CEO of the YMCA of Oakville. Last year, the YMCA of Oakville presented YMCA Peace Medallions to Sahil Ahuja (youth) for creating the SPEAK Program at Appleby College; and Jo Fallon (adult) founder of The Lighthouse Program for Grieving Children and the St. Thomas Aquinas Peace and Justice Club (group) for their work in local and Kirk Smalley global communities. Special recognition was also given to a second youth recipient, Tatum Martino, for the creation of Duck Tape wallets to raise money for her friend who suffers from Angelman Syndrome. Since 1987, more than 1,500 individuals and groups across Canada have been recognized with YMCA Peace Medallion recipients.
