Oakville Half Marathon returns Sunday It would be difficult for Tyler Chacra to top his experience from last September, but he's determined at least one thing he'd like to improve on this weekend. "Within a two-week span, I became a father and then became the first-ever Oakville resident to win the Nutrience Oakville Half Marathon," Chacra, who crossed the finish line of last year's event in a time of 1:15:31, recalled. Chacra will look to set a personal best Sunday when the Oakville Half Marathon returns for its eighth year, attracting participants from as far away as Jamaica, Kenya, Trinidad, Uganda, England and the U.S. The course record of 1:07:12, set in 2008 by four-time champion Predrag Mladenovic, is also in Chacra's sights. "Training has been progressing quite well," Chacra said. All of the event's races will begin at Coronation Park, 1426 Lakeshore Rd. W. The 10K and 10K student relay will start at 7:30 a.m., followed by the Nutrience Half Marathon at 7:45 a.m. and the Whole Foods Market 2K Fun Run/Walk at 7:50 a.m. A free runner's expo will take place tomorrow from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. (Saturday) at Coronation Park, featuring a variety of vendors distributing free samples and products. OSC U15 girls rally late, defeat Niagara Falls in SRSL final The Oakville Soccer Club's under-15 girls' C team overcame a 1-0 halftime deficit to defeat the Niagara Falls Titans in a shootout and win the South Region Soccer League (SRSL) League Cup Saturday in Stoney Creek. Anne-Sophie Sraka scored for Oakville to tie the game in the 82nd minute, converting on a free kick. Nadia Djedovic, Megan Sabatelli, Emily Doman and Sara Marshall then scored in penalty kicks and keeper Alex Sacha stopped two Titans attempts. The SRSL League Cup title was the first for the team, which outscored its opponents 13-2 during the playoffs. Also contributing to the win were Emma Coulter, Ava Grant, Samantha Cipriano, Samantha Martirena, Chloe Gallant, Victoria McKean, Jessica Barsalou, Jordan Somers, Lauren Kool, Melody Ghaly and Shantal DaSilva. Anthony Sabatelli, Elena Cipriano and Dave Coulter coach the squad. 27 | Friday, September 19, 2014 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com Oakville resident Tyler Chacra won last year's Nutrience Oakville Half Marathon. | Oakville Beaver file photo Skate Oakville season already underway Summer may not have officially ended yet, but the Skate Oakville 2014-15 figure-skating season is already into full swing. Twenty-five of the club's competitive skaters, overseen by competitive director Michelle Leigh, combined to win nine medals at various events this summer as they prepared for qualifying meets this fall. Several will attend an invitational competition in Paris, Ont., this weekend in advance of the Skate Canada Central Ontario sectionals Oct. 30Nov. 2 in Georgetown. Skate Oakville will also send one skater, Emma Dinda (novice women), to the Skate Ontario Super Series Final in Ottawa Oct. 3-5. The club will ice 10 synchronized skating teams this season, the most in Skate Oakville history, ranging in age and ability levels from beginner to adult. More than 100 skaters make up the teams that practise on a weekly basis and will each enter at least three competitions. Several of the teams are top contenders in their divisions, including two squads that advanced to the national championships last year. Jennifer O'Brien is the head of the synchronized skating program. In the first week of October, Skate Oakville will welcome back its Learn to Skate participants, some of whom attended summer camps that were a joint venture with the Town of Oakville. Also, the STARSkaters who come out a few times per week for the love of skating and participate in Skate Canada will return to the ice. The club's competitive ice dance program, headed by Mark Bradshaw, enters its fourth season with five competitive teams. It also offers opportunities for skaters competing in solo dance events as well as a junior dance program for skaters interested in ice dance but not yet partnered with another skater. Skate Oakville will also host Synchro Capers, a large synchronized skating competition, for the third year in a row. The event, slated for Jan. 31-Feb. 1, is expected to attract more than 1,000 skaters from 100-plus teams across the province. In March, the club will hold its biennial ice show where skaters at all levels, including the youngest preschool Learn to Skate participants, are able to have fun and show off their love of the sport. Skate Oakville features more than 2,500 skaters and was recently named by Skate Canada as the largest skating club in Canada for the third year in a row. The club is based out of Sixteen Mile Sports Complex and also operates out of Glen Abbey Recreation Centre. WE HAVE LESS EXPENSIVE LEAGUE OPTIONS!!
