www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Thursday, October 23, 2014 | 42 Province enhancing measures in dealing with Ebola virus The Ontario government is increasing its readiness to contain and treat any potential case of the Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) in the province. The announcement, made in a press release issued by the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care stated the measures are meant to further protect the safety of all Ontarians, including healthcare workers. "The safety of the Ontario public, including our dedicated healthcare workers, is my top priority -- and I am committed to doing everything necessary to protect their safety," Dr. Eric Hoskins, minister of Health and Long-Term Care, said in the release. "These enhanced measures will make our preparedness even stronger... I will continue to monitor the situation and work closely with the interim chief medical officer of health to ensure the safety and protection of all Ontarians." The new measures include: · asking Ontario's interim Chief Medical Officer of Health to issue a directive to hospitals and other smaller care settings about new personal protective equipment and training requirements as well as enhanced procedures for containing and treating Ebola; · designating Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario, Hamilton Health Sciences, Health Sciences North, Hospital for Sick Children, Kingston General Hospital, London Health Sciences Centre, The Ottawa Hospital, St. Michael's Hospital, Sunnybrook Hospital, and University Health Network's Toronto Western Hospital as the referral hospitals to treat potential cases of Ebola; · enhancing the province's inventory and availability of personal protective equipment, including ensuring the availability of N95 protective respirators; · testing Ebola specimens at Public Health Ontario's (PHO) provincial labs; · creating a formal Minister's Advisory Table on Ebola Preparedness, which will include frontline workers and healthcare providers. It will meet regularly to provide ongoing advice to the minister of Health and Long-Term Care; · creating an Ebola Command Table, which will be chaired by the health minister and include the interim chief medical officer of health, the deputy minister, PHO, the Ministry of Labour and other partner ministries and representatives from the province's Local Health Integration Networks (LHINs) and designated referral hospitals, among others; · assigning appropriately outfitted ambulances to transport potential cases of Ebola to the designated hospitals for treatment. "Our hospitals have sophisticated infection control systems in place that are designed to limit the spread of infection, protect health care workers, and provide the best care possible for the patient, " Dr. David Mowat, interim chief medical officer of health, said in the release. The Province says it continues to work closely with the Public Health Agency of Canada and the other provincial and territorial governments. The current Ebola outbreak began in West Africa in March and has become an unprecedented, growing international concern, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). The global health body declared Ebola "a public health emergency of international concern" on Aug. 8. Ten Ontario patients have been tested for possible Ebola infection with negative results. There are no confirmed cases of the EVD in Ontario. For more information, visit www.health. gov.on.ca/en/public/programs/emu/ebola. Health "Connected to your Community" Don't miss this opportunity.
