"The goal of Craft Crawl is to benefit not only the community of Oakville by creating a fun, engaging event for families to attend, but also to help secondary school students to gain exposure to event planning and management, and arts advocacy," said Ronja Philipp, who teaches visual arts at White Oaks Secondary School (WOSS). Philipp and Mark Ainsley, another teacher at WOSS, are the event co-ordinators, along with Dawn Goodwin Barnes, who teaches at Iroquois Ridge High School. "The Craft Crawl event is collaboration between White Oaks Secondary School's Art Council and Iroquois Ridge High School's Holiday Market team," noted Phillip. "This project was developed in an effort to promote local artists and provide a fun family event for the community of Oakville." The craft sale event will showcase the works of more than 120 vendors of food and arts and crafts at two locations in Oakville. Those who attend the Craft Crawl can make their way to WOSS's Craftstock sale, held at the 1130 Montclair Dr. school from 9 a.m.-3 p.m., and Iroquois Ridge's Holiday Market sale, which will be open from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. at the 1123 Glenashton Dr. school. Vendors at both locations are local artists from the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) who will exhibit, as well as have for sale, handmade products, such as jewelry, knitted/crocheted and home décor items, artisan foods and visual arts and crafts. "The White Oaks location will also feature the Beavertails food truck with hot pastries and poutine, while Iroquois Ridge will be serving savoury homemade chili and a multitude of treats," said Phillip. Call to local poets to take part in upcoming Christmas showcase Aspiring poets are invited to submit a piece to the Ontario Poetry Society (OPS), Oakville chapter, for an upcoming showcase in downtown Oakville. Josie Di Sciascio-Andrews, poet and chair of OPS Oakville, is putting on a Christmas showcase of poetry, titled It was the Night Before Christmas..., in December. "This will give our talented poets visibility and recognition, as well as give shoppers a chance to enjoy local Christmas poetry during the shopping season," Di Sciascio-Andrews said in a press release. Christmas, winter-themed poems Interested poets are asked to send the OPS Oakville chair one Christmas- or winter-themed poem to Di Sciascio-Andrews at j_andrews@sympatico.ca. "I will then print these and post them on store windows in downtown Oakville," she said. "Everyone's poem will be posted. If anyone has more than one poem, that would be great too." Di Sciascio-Andrews asks submissions be sent in during the first week of November since the Oakville Santa Claus Parade takes place the following week and she hopes to have the poems in shop windows prior to the parade. "Kindly send your poem, with the title and your name on it, to me," she said. "Don't send the poem in a document, but kindly cut and paste it into the body of your email. It will be easier for me to print. I will print them off on red and green paper and laminate them."
