Working at Acclaim Health, Ighodaro said she felt "really proud" to be recognized for her work because people get to see what caregivers do. "It is really great for me to go out there every day to do what I do. I'm not the only hero, there are a lot of heroes out there. Everyone that does this work is a hero. I receive it on behalf of all my colleagues," said Ighodaro, a two-time hero award winner. The most rewarding part of Ighodaro's job is the "laughter and smiles" of her clients, she said, and the appreciation they have for her care. Dr. Helen Pyle, a physician specializing in palliative care, was recognized for her work. She has been practising locally since 1977. She became "very involved" in the profession after her mother died of cancer at home, Pyle said. "As a typical teenager, I didn't want to do what my mother wanted me to do. When she died, I realized that what I really wanted to do was go to medical school. I did and graduated from the University of Toronto in 1973," said Pyle, who now focuses on palliative care. "I've kind of done the full gambit of the experience of being an all-around family Bourne was nominated by her three children, including Linda Kennedy, a recipient of the award last year. "It's a unique situation with the two of us having received the awards with such unusual stories. It's a very special thing. It's a very special award," said Bourne. "My husband and I are childhood sweethearts. I've known him all my life."
