The 88-year-old historian and storyteller won the Community Spirit Award for History and Heritage on June 12. She died the following day at Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Wilson's Community Spirit Award was accepted on her behalf by her 14-year-old granddaughter Jessica Gall. Five years ago, Mrs. Wilson ensured her passion for local history would continto work as a volunteer. Bom in Markham. Ont., on Nov. 18, 1914, she moved with her family to Cherry Hill Farm on Dundas Street when she was two years old. She grew to love Oakville and its history. She shared her stories of yesteryear with Girl Guide groups and her fellow volunteers with the Oakville Historical Society, Oakville Museum at Erchless, the Oakville Firefighters Ladies Auxiliary and Front Row Centre at the Oakville Centre for the Performing Arts. She was named Oakville's Senior of the Year in 1992. Often she dressed in period costume, and her stories were always filled with humour. "Volunteering for the Oakville Historical Society was just one of her community activities," said Harry Buxton. "She would talk to groups about local history and her reminiscences. She mailed out our newsletters. And, because of her Girl Guide connections, she always sold Girl Guide cookies in our office. "She was a staunch member of our society," said Buxton. "We lowered our flag to half-mast when she died." As a member of Front Row Centre, she worked in the cloakroom at the Oakville Centre. "She was active, vibrant and dedicated to Oakville," said theatre manager Ken Coulter. "She was as likely to be seen here as at the Oakville Historical Society or the Oakville Museum at Erchless, and she had a good word to say to everybody. Mabel always had a positive view on life, and she was an inspiration to everybody. "She knew Oakville since it was small and is one of the few people who really cared." Beatrice Jones, volunteer coordinator for the Oakville Museum, described Mrs. Wilson as a delight to work with. ."She helped out with our cutting bee to prepare materials for the kids' programs, and while cutting, she would regale us stories of old Oakville, wonderful stories. She had a wealth of information and her stories were wonderful to hear." Jones said Mrs. Wilson often took a group of senior ladies shopping or to doc tors' appointments. "She was a wonderful one-to-one volunteer to these ladies. "Mabel was always helping other peo ple," said Jones. She married the late John Douglas Wilson. Oakville's first full time fire chief, on Sept. II, 1937 at Knox Sixteen Church. He died in 1988. A son. Larry, predeceased her 30 years ago. Surviving here are daughters Gail Wilson of the Yukon and Carol Gall of Oakville, and grandchildren Jason, Jennifer, Chelsea and Jessica. ' The couple keep themselves busy with exercise every morning, special activities planned by an activities coordinator named Catherine, and monthly trips out with the "Lunch Bunch'. The group, which meets once or twice a month, visits local restaurants in Oakville, which Vem says expands on their love of getting out and getting active. "It's a chance to get out and do something different, we like to call them safaris because it gives us a chance to explore different things," says Vera. I t 's also great because we don't have wheels to get around and so it's difficult to get certain places, but with the Lunch Bunch we've been to restaurants downtown and to shopping malls in the area." Vera is also able to practice one of her passions - plaving the organ. After being unused for years at Queens Avenue, Vera was approached by resident Joe Kaufmann to accompany him on the violin. Since then, Vera has enjoyed playing for group sing a longs, special occasions, and 'whenever the mood moves me'. For Vem and Vera.
