Last year, the federal government introduced up to 35 weeks of Employment Insurance (EI) special benefits for parents to care for a critically-ill or injured child. "I think we underestimate the turmoil that people go through when a child goes missing, or when a child is a killed as a result of a murder, or some other criminal act," Flynn told the Beaver after the news conference. Flynn said he'd written to Minister of Employment and Social Development Jason Kenney asking that those EI benefit be extended to Ontario caregivers on leave from work. "Where the federal government can play a huge role in this is funding these people during that period of time -- it's what we pay Employment Insurance for," Flynn said. "I'm expecting at the end of the day there'll be an agreement..." The amended legislation also builds on the existing family medical leave, which allows caregivers to take 26 weeks of leave when a family member faces a significant risk of death. In applying for any leave, a worker is required to obtain a certificate from a qualified health practitioner confirming their family member is suffering from a serious medical condition. Employees are then required, if requested to do so, to produce that certificate for their employer. "Employers know that it is good for the moral of their employees to have fair and compassionate policies at work that allow those employees to balance their work and life," Flynn said. "Few things are as important, and as comforting, as having a loved one by your side when you're fighting an illness or recovering from an accident."
