A lot of wonderful musicians, writers and children who wrote poems came out of this camp," said Willinger. "People did everything to live and to think optimistically and still were able to appreciate music, literature and each other." Willinger and the others were liberated from Theresienstadt in June 1945 -- a day he remembers well because they were freed by Soviet Union (Russian) soldiers. "I remember being picked up and hugged and I remember getting a candy. That's the only memory I have. I remember the Gershon Willinger long trip in army trucks back to Holland. The trip took three days," Willinger recalled. When he arrived in Holland, Willinger was quickly identified by army officials and returned to his "wartime family," he said. "I felt very much at home there and I thought I was going to stay, but the Dutch department for war orphans came one day, (took me away) and I went to my next place, which happened to be an orphanage." Willinger noted Holland had a Jewish population of 140,000 before the war, but as many as 103,000 -- who fled the country during battle -- were killed. He eventually became a social worker and immigrated to Canada in 1977. He and his wife of 45 years, Jane, have three children and several grandchildren. "We were able to make a life for ourselves. This is the prize I received... because there is a continuation of the generations here, which is very, very important." Following Willinger's presentation, the audience was shown the musical docudrama Enduring Alterations by Miriam Preszow Weiner, who introduced the film. Born in Amsterdam and raised in Montreal, Weiner's parents survived the Holocaust.
