Ring in the start of the holiday season with Masterworks' Christmas concert The Masterworks of Oakville (MWO) Chorus and Orchestra is ringing in the holiday season with a concert featuring Johann Sebastian Bach's Christmas Oratorio this weekend. "What better way to start the season than attending a joyous and festive concert featuring Oakville's premier choir," said a news release. "Masterworks is known for its selection of the most challenging choral works; works seldom performed outside metropolitan centres." Concert broadcasted on TV For the upcoming concerts on Saturday (Nov. 22) and Sunday (Nov. 23), MWO will be performing with a choir of 85 singers and an orchestra of 35 players -- the performance will also be recorded for broadcast on television. "Bach's Christmas Oratorio brings the joy of the season with brilliant and joyful choruses resounding," MWO artistic director Charles Demuynck, said in the release. "The story of Christ's birth is told by four talented soloists, an excellent chorus of your friends and neighbours, and a virtuoso orchestra with spectacular trumpet solos -- an event not to be missed." Featured soloists The concerts will feature soloists: soprano Allison Arends; mezzo soprano Christy Derksen; tenor Lenard Whiting; and bass Jesse Clark. Held at St. Matthew Catholic Church, 1150 Monks Passage, the Saturday concert starts at 8 p.m. with the Sunday show beginning at 3 p.m. Tickets cost $30 for adults, $25 for seniors and $15 for students aged 10 and older. Children younger than age 10, and accompanied by an adult, can enter free. To purchase tickets, visit www.masterworksofoakville.ca, FirstOntario Credit Union, Leslie Music and Notes in Oakville, or Long & McQuade in Burlington. The Halton K9 Lions Club will also be fundraising for its organization by selling handmade chocolate giftbags during the intermissions, as well as refreshments. All proceeds will aid the club in assisting Lions Foundation Dog Guide graduates with grants for emergency veterinarian care for their dog guide. 49 | Thursday, November 20, 2014 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com Oakville actor Elijha Hammill, 11, won a Joey Award Sunday during a red carpet gala in Vancouver. A red carpet gala was held at The Metro in Vancouver for the awards that celebrate young Canadian performers and talent. "I was so nervous I could feel my nervousness in my stomach and I was starting to sweat," Elijha said of the time before the announcement was made. "When they called my name, I felt every bit of nervousness was out of my system like a tire losing air quickly. Afterwards, I thought, `Oh my gosh, I don't even remember who I thanked.'" Elijha was nominated, along with four others, in the young actor age eight or younger in a TV commercial category. The ad he was in was one of several commercials that made up a CBCF national campaign with DARE North presents... America, which ran June 3-Oct. 6, 2013 to help drive participation in CBCF's annual fundraising run. Hammill's mother Cherise said she was so deep in thought, hoping her son wouldn't cry if he didn't win, she didn't even hear the nominees names being read. "When they called his name, it took me awhile to realize he won and then I was so happy for him. He works so hard," she said. "My face lit up and I was smiling from ear to ear." Cherise says Elijha, a student at River Oaks Public School, wasn't always as outgoing as he is now and credits acting for bringing him out of his shell.
