Bronte student scoops silver A member of Bronte Taekwondo in Oakville captured two silver medals at the Canadian National Taekwondo championships in Winnipeg over the June 27-29 weekend. Trevor Pallo, 11, competing in the U-32 kilogram `Fin' divi sion, black belt category, cap tured a silver medal in both the patterns and full contact sparring competitions. The Burlington resident trains out of Bronte Taekwondo which is owned and operated by his uncle. Bill Pallo. The WTK Taekwondo Association of Canada hosted the meet. Pallo, a member of the provincial team, earned his sec ond dan black belt under the Chung Won Institute of Taekwondo. Pallo was a gold medalist at the 2001 national cham pi onships. Ryan Dowling, a Burlington resident and member at Kicks for Kids, also competed and placed third in the same event. Lang and Matheson with national team Two Oakville soccer stars have been called up to the national women's soccer team for this week's exhibition series against Brazil. Games are Thursday in Montreal and Sunday in Ottawa. Oakville players are Kara Lang and Diana M atheson. both long time m em bers o f the Oakville Soccer Club. Along with Burlington's Melanie Booth, also named to the squad, they chipped in last Thursday night in Oakville at a barbecue in support of the Law Enforcem ent Torch Run for Special Olympics that was organized by the Halton Regional Police Service. Brazil has defeated Canada twice in their only two previous meetings -- 4-2 on June 4. 1999 in Portland. Oregon, and 2-1 on July 4. 1996 in South Dakota. "These games could easily prove to be the Canadian W omen's World Cup team 's highlight o f this sum m er's preparations for the World Cup." said Canadian national team coach Even Pellerud. The U.S. is hosting the World Cup in September. Oakville wins all-Halton final in U.S. The Oakville Cobras girls U17 rep soccer team won the championship at the BC Kicks Soccer Showcase Tournament in Vestal, New York on the firstclass 10-field facility at Binghamton University over the Memorial Day Weekend. Ironically, the championship was an all-Halton affair with Oakville defeating neighbouring Burlington Blast 4-0. Even with the difficult weath er conditions the girls took on all comers outscoring the opposition 14-1 and picking up 34 of a pos sible 36 points in the preliminary round. Oakville defeated New Jersey Scream 2-0, Mount Hamilton 60, New Jersey Furies 4-1 (their only goal on one of two penalty shots) and Pennsylvania Redland Strikers 2-0. The Cobras also won their Ontario Cup tournament round this past weekend (see story D1). Red Devils keeper gets European try-out Nils Binstock, a goaltender for the Oakville Red Devils boys U-16 rep soccer team, is set to try his hand in Europe. The Burlington resident will depart for Denmark on Aug 4 after being given an opportunity to try out for the youth U-16 team attached to A kadem isk Boldklub Copenhagen Binstock was given a twoyear residency permit, and has been accepted to Norre Gymnasium (High School). Most recently Binstock was guest player for Ajax Gunners U-16 at this year's Robbie tour nament and was awarded MVP of tournament. Binstock expressed his appreciation for the many coaches and players that have helped him with a special thanks to current coach Mike Griffin, assistant coach Craig Russell and Keeper coach Senad Amautovic.
