The soccer squad has posted secondand third-place finishes in its first two tournaments of its inaugural season, impressive feats considering the Fury is competing against teams that have been together for several years. However, Oakville coaches and players take more pride in the way their team has developed mental toughness and determination, exhibited in a recent tournament in Mississauga. The Fury opened the tournament with a pair of wins, knocking off Erin Mills 3-1 and blanking Pickering 2-0. Anna Lubinsky scored twice while Caroline Shutt added a single against Erin Mills. Chrissi Ottoni and Katie Walker provided the offence versus Pickering in support of keeper Amanda Pereira. Oakville received its first taste of adversity against the Dixie Attack, falling behind 1-0 early in the game. After Ashleigh Dorrington tied the con test, Dixie went on to score four unan swered goals and claim a 5-1 victory. "The girls were definitely demoral ized after the second Dixie goal and then everything just got worse," said assistant coach John Sousa. "After the game we talked about the importance of staying focused... no matter what the score. Character teams are ones that play well when they're down by two." Facing the very same Attack in the tournament semifinal, the Fury bounced Soccer back with a much stronger perform ance. Oakville appeared to score two goals but both were disallowed as the teams battled through scoreless regula tion and two extra time periods. In the end, Dixie came out with a 1-0 shootout victory. "We were so proud of how the girls fought back ." coach Monique Sousa said afterward. "They showed a lot of leadership and character. I think they grew up a lot, both individually and as a team. And that is really what sports are all about." The Fury finished second at an Erin Mills tournament last month, beating Clarkson, Brantford and North Mississauga before falling in the final to East York. ers to earn most valuable player hon ours while Brett Fong was solid in goal for the Fusion. Ben Hasko, Daniel Fevreau and Francouer scored against Dixie. Oakville finished second at the 12team Mississauga all-star tournament the previous weekend. After starting the season slowly, the Fusion has won 13 of its past 15 tournament contests. Other players on the team include James Varanesi, Thomas Lavecchia, Joshua Wise, M ichael MacArthur, Stephen M issiuna, Vincent Seidner, Franklin Domsy, Nathan FloresMiranda, Robert Fusco, Chris Peluso, Colin Lippert and James Langlois. Under-15 girls After going winless in its Fust two games, the Oakville Wild under-15 girls team rallied to reach the final at a tour nament in Markham last weekend. Despite having some great scoring opportunities, including a hit goalpost by Stephanie Krush, the Wild lost 1-0 to the Unionville-Markham Strikers in the championship game. The Strikers scored the game's only goal late in. the second half. Lindsay Franco was named Oakville's player of the game. Oakville tied Unionville-Markham 0-0 to open the tournament and then dropped a 2-1 decision to East York. Effie Petrou scored for the Wild. The team bounced back in its next two games, downing Glen Shields and Vaughan by 2-1 scores. Sarah Collins and Petrou scored against Glen Shields while Krush and Collins were the Oakville snipers versus Vaughan. In recent league play, the Wild tied the Oakville Red Stars 1-1. Krush scored with less than five minutes remaining in regulation to salvage a draw for the Wild, which is sponsored by RBC Capital Markets. Under-11 boys Building on its strong performance at a recent tournament in Mississauga, the Oakville Fusion under-11 boys allstar team won the championship at its own regional tournament last weekend. The Fusion won all five of its games, defeating Erin Mills 3-1, Ancaster 8-0 and Clarkson 5-0 in round-robin play, knocking off Dixie 3-1 in the semifinal and rallying to beat the North Mississauga Panthers 3-1 in the final. The Panthers opened the scoring before Oakville got goals from Gabrielle Francouer, Alex Lerke and Jordan Kotsopoulos to take the victory. Kotsopoulos also set up a pair of mark- 699 Guelph Line, Burlington (at Prospect - Next Door to McDonalds) UNIQUE CABINET CONCEPTS Manufacturers o f Fine Cabinetry w d L a KITCHENS ^ MENS OR LADIES " D o in g It R ig h t" Since 1 9 7 6 _ . f J P CUSTOM . After two tight wins in the opening round, Oakville faced top-seeded Innisfil in the semifinal and won the game in sudden death overtime. Extra time was needed to decide a winner in the tournament final as well, but the Bulldogs fell 1-0 to Kitchener.
