"This anniversary is a celebration o f 50 years o f learning and belonging to the Oakwood com m unity," says Demetra Saldaris, current Principal o f Oakwood Public School. "O ur school community represents one o f the most diverse areas in Halton w ith 18 different languages spoken and 21 per cent o f the school speaking a language other than English at home. This anniversary allows us to celebrate our school's diversity once again." To continue to celebrate its cultural diversity, the school held its first annu al spring M ulticultural Festival in 2001 which saw O a kville 's m ulticultural community come together in a rainbow o f costumes and dance to taste tradi tional meals from around the world. According to school archives, Oakwood Public School was opened in 1953 as the fourth elementary school in the O akville School Board. As the first school to be built in O a kville in more than 30 years, Oakwood's facilities were considered "state o f the art." They included an auditorium/gymnasium w ith stage, a fu lly equipped home economics room, an industrial arts/woodworking room and two staff rooms - one for male staff and one fo r female staff. V ikki Sweetman, school council co chair says that reaching the 50 year mark isn't a milestone taken lightly around Oakwood. For the third time running. Oakwood finds itself on the Halton District School Board proposed list for school closures in 2005. " I f it were up to the Halton Board O f Education in its 1996 and 1998 closing proposals, Oakwood would have never reached 45," she said. The school and its supportive com munity successfully fought two con secutive recommendations from the Halton District School board in 1997 and 1999 to close their only remaining neighborhood school and Sweetman hopes the school w ill again have the support i( needs to continue to be the "jew el o f the community." "W e're getting together solid data that supports Oakwood's future," she said promising to be there for the school's 75th anniversary. "The 50th anniversary brings peo ple from the past and present together which strengthens Oakwood's commu nity ties. R eflecting back on Oakwood's past five decades enables us to visualize a tim e-line which reminds us that Oakwood not only belongs to the present, but to the past and the future. This renews a sense o f ownership and responsibility for the Oakwood o f today and tomorrow." said Saldaris. At 50 years, Oakwood's celebra tions w ill reflect just how deeply its roots have reached into the community past and present.
