After a torrid start to the Provincial Junior A Hockey League season in which they were ranked as the top tier two ju n io r team in the country, the Blades have struggled, by their standards, in recent "We've had a weeks. big bulls eye In fact, on our backs Oakville dropped since August. three consecutive We're looking games -- two on home ice -- forward to a bit before snapping of a break, out of its funk then getting on Saturday with a 6to a special 2 victory over the second half." slumping Milton IceHawks. ·Blades coach Blades head Frank Camevale coach Frank Camevale says he's not concerned. Oakville still owns the second-best record in the 35-team league (29-4-02), and has 14 games to prepare for what is expected to be a lengthy play off run. "We've had a big bulls eye on our backs since August," Carnevale said. "We're looking forward to a bit of a break, then getting on to a special second half (of the season)." Coming off losses to the Hamilton Red Wings and Brampton Capitals the previous weekend, the Blades hoped to return to their winning See Blades page D2 PETER C. McCUSKER / OAKVILLE BEAVER TO P OF T H E W O R LD : Canada won the over all title (the Nations Cup) at the world dragon boat championships in Shanghai in October. As usual, Oakville and the sur rounding area was very well represented on the Canadian teams, including (from left to right): 1984 Olympic gold and silver medalist Larry Cain, Toby Collins, Sheila Kuyper, Kara Reid, Mary Ann Siriunas, Chanda Reid and Lucy Goodwin. Local paddlers help put Canada on top By Jon Kuiperij OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF With the world dragon boat champi onships held in Shanghai this past fall, this was supposed to be the year for the Chinese. However, led by a number of area resi dents, Canada spoiled the party. Oakville's Chanda Reid, Lucy Goodwin and Mary Ann Siriunas, along with Burlington's Sheila Kuyper and Kara Reid, helped the national women's squad claim gold in the 200-metre race, bronze in the 1,000m distance and fourth in the 500m event. Oakville natives Larry Cain and Toby Collins were part of the men's team that won the 200m race and took silver in 1,000m and 500m events. Kuyper, Siriunas, Cain and the Reid sis ters -- all members of the Burloak Canoe Club -- were also part of the Canadian mixed boat, winning silver in 500m and finishing fourth in 200m. W ith the strong showings from all of its teams in the premier division, Canada won the Nations Cup for- the third year in a row. "To win it in China, where dragon boat is very traditional, was pretty cool," said Kara Reid, an Oakville Trafalgar high school graduate who now works as an ath letic therapist at Fairview Rehabilitation in Burlington. " I think (the Chinese) were really assuming they were going to win, so they were really surprised when we won it." Canada's victory in the 200m women's race marked the first time the Chinese women's team had ever been defeated in world championship action. The Canadians were able to overcome a number of disad vantages, including heavier boats than they were accustomed to and the fact they met some of their teammates mere days before the competition.
