The 22-year-old Oakville resident also had to contend with a bizarre and sudden change in climate as warm and sunny weather gave way to rain and c h illy temperatures fo r Saturday's race. Like many o f the duathletes,1Smith was unprepared fo r the nine-degree weather and lengthy downpour. That sort o f atmosphere, combined with the taxing and h illy Swiss course, exacted a toll on Smith as he barely managed to cross the finish line before immediate ly being treated fo r hypothermia. " It was one o f the toughest runs L' ve ever done," said Smith o f the five-kilometre stretch to finish the race. " I thought to myself this might be the last time I ' ll ever be in Switzerland and just to finish the race. It wasn't a mat ter o f time." Smith, one o f the top-ranked under23 duathletes.in North America last year, finished near the bottom o f the pack at the worlds. He qualified for the competition with a second-place showing at the Canadian championships in Calgary earlier this year. Despite his struggles in Switzerland, Smith took a lot out o f his second world championship experi ence. Smith also appreciated how challeng ing the course was. both geographically and technically. The duathlon featured l OK and 5K runs, sandwiched around a 40K bike ride on a trail that had approx imately 120 metres in elevation. Finally, through his ability to perse vere and finish the race. Smith learned a bit about himself. " Something like that d efinitely builds character," said the Queen Elizabeth Park High School student. " Can' t is not a word. Once you get negative thoughts into your race, it just goes dow nhill. It's a matter o f thinking positive and not giving up -- then you can accomplish anything." Smith is returning to the U niversity o f Waterloo for his fourth year o f stud ies, where he captains the cross-coun try team.
