Savoline. who has held the position since 1994. said the love of the job -- and the backing from her family -- are the main reasons why she paid her $200 registration fee in a bid for another term in office. "I still have a strong passion for what I do." she said. "I still have the energy the job requires, and I love Halton and the differences of the (four) munici palities. "1 could never do a job like this without the sup port at home." Municipal elections across Ontario will be held Nov. 10. Joyce Savoline Savoline is one of two regional chair candidates to register so far. The other is Burlington resident Anne Marsden. Halton will be facing a number of pressing issues in the coming years that Savoline said she wants to help steer. "I feel there are a lot of things that are happening right now (hat I'm very interested in." Those things include ensuring imple mentation of a revised Official Plan -- a municipality's main blueprint for growth -- as well as dealing with regional growth issues and increasing financial pressures from the provincial government. Marsden. who vied for regional chair in 2000 and 1997. thinks families are being under-serviced in Halton. "I want to see the families served in Halton and 1 want to bring back the heart to Halton." she said. For information on how to register for the chair's position, call the Region at 905-825-6000. The long-aw aited O ntario Municipal Board ( O M B ) hearing -- which will seal the future of Oakville north o f Dundas Street -- begins Monday at 10 a.m. Given the complexity and seriousness of the issues, three months have been set aside to hear evidence in the hearing, which last year was called "the most important Ontario Municipal Board case of 2003'" for the 905 area by University of Toronto urban studies professor David Lewis Stein. Over and over, they cited the same problems -- noisy trucks operating at all hours o f the night, smelly fumes per meating their backyards and homes, the clanking and crash ing of trailers being loaded and unloaded. But they also consistently told councillors that a proposed (See Warehouse' page A7) Chantal Ayotte · Special to the Oakville Beaver MARTIN IN FIGHTING FORM: Federal L iberal leadership hopeful Paul M artin breezed into town Sunday to meet and greet p arty faithful. Anderson is adamant that the Town of Oakville take action immediately to fix the creek-tumed-storm management channel that has become a bog at the bottom of his backyard and those of his neighbours. The waterway would be of no conse quence, says Anderson, if there was a steady flow. Long after it rains, howev er, standing water remains and just south of his property there is a perma nent bog - a perfect breeding site for mosquitoes. The pesky insects were so bad last year that Anderson and his fam ily were reluctant to even go outside. Now, as just about everyone knows, the bugs also carry the potentially dead ly West Nile virus (WNV), a disease that last summer struck a 72-year neigh bour on Wolsey Crescent. How much convincing does the Town require, says Anderson. 'Hie homeowner, who has lived on Lees Lane for three years, asserts that the watercourse is no longer a naturallvfed creek but rather a canal for converg ing run-off from the larger neighbour hood. As such, he believes the stagnant water makes the problem a municipal responsibility. If he had a poorly-graded yard and run-off damaged a neighbour's proper ty. Anderson continued, he would be on the hook for the bill. If the "creek" is used by the municipality for storm water management, it should rectify the situation. "This is my backyard, so why can the Town dump water on my property? They can't have it both ways," he said. "This is serious." North o f A nderson's home at Pinegrove Road and Lees, a large cov ered culvert empties storm water from Speers Road underneath Pinegrove then along the approximately 1.500-foot uncovered "creek" to another covered pipe. This drains the water further south (See 'Town page A3) HIDE Editorials............................
