B2 · The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday July 23, 2003 BE S T II IIE EL S Ford Motor Company's 100th anniversary marks a major milestone for a company that started in a con verted Detroit wagon shop to become the second-largest automaker in the world. " Our goal is to build on our tradi tional strengths and redefine them for the 21st century. We're going to apply fresh thinking and innovative tech nology to everything we do, from our basic business processes to the prod ucts that define who we are as a com pany," says Company Chairman and Chief Executive Officer B ill Ford. Ford's product vision begins in North America with the biggest wave of new product introductions in its history. The company plans to intro duce 65 new Ford, Lincoln and Mercury products during the next five years. The first of those new products is the all-new 2(M > 4 Ford F-150 pick up. which debuts this fall. The F-Series is the most successful vehicle in the history of automobiles. Since the truck's debut in 1948. more than 27.5 million have been sold. It has also been the best-selling truck in America for 26 years and the best selling vehicle for 21 straight years. Building on that foundation, the 2004 F-150 redefines "B u ilt Ford Tough" by offering the industry's broadest variety of body and trim configurations, more power and pay load. more cargo volume and more capability all around. That toughness is combined with new convenience features, such as four doors on every vehicle, more interior space - six more inches in the Regular and SuperCab - as well as a bold exterior design and a knockout interior. W hile the impact of the new F-150 cannot be overstated, it's not the only news for the 2004 model year. A rebadged. redesigned version of Windstar. the Ford Freestar. also joins the lineup in the fall. The Freestar is designed to be the most flexible, most powerful and highest-quality minivan Ford ever has built. Freestar offers safety features including available rollover side cur tain air bags in all three rows of seats. In addition, the vehicle's interior is all-new and more functional than ever. The first three Ford GTs take to the streets, with full-scale production beginning in 2004. The Ford G T is Ford's first all-aluminum space frame vehicle and serves as a test bed for introducing new processes and light weight materials in other products. The supercar was developed in fewer than 15 months to celebrate Ford's 100th anniversary. Ford Motor Company and HarleyDavidson both celebrate centennials this year - and have teamed up again for the newest iteration of the world's best-selling truck featuring an option al 6.0-liter Power Stroke® diesel engine. Passenger weight-sensing technol ogy - an addition to Ford's Personal Safety System TM - is expanded to the new Ford F-150. Taurus and Freestar. Later this year. Ford begins pro duction of the Ford Escape Hybrid, which combines a gasoline engine with an electric drivetrain as a prom ising near-term solution to greatly reduced emissions and improved fuel economy. Low-volume fleet produc tion starts at year-end. and retail pro duction begins in mid-2004. As the first true no-compromise hybrid SUV. the Escape Hybrid com bines the cargo capacity andgo-anywhere capability of the Ford Escape with the fuel economy and emissions benefits of a " full" hybrid system. Its 300-volt nickel-metal-hydridc battery' allows the vehicle to run on either the gasoline engine or battery power alone and achieve 35 to 40 miles per gallon fuel economy in the city driv ing cycle, as well as extraordinarily low S U L E V and P Z E V emissions standards. Ford has also announced that its future midsize sedan, the Futura. w ill be the company's next hybrid vehicle. Like the Escape Hybrid, the Futura Hybrid combines a 2.3-liter 1-4 gaso line engine with a 65-kW electric motor. The Futura Hybrid w ill be introduced after the 4- and 6-cylinder Futura models enter production in II U VI L L E Future is bright for Ford - 65 products in 5 years Ford's product vision begins in North America with the biggest wave of new product introductions in its history. The company plans to introduce 65 new Ford, Lincoln and M ercury products during the next five years. The first of those new products is the all-new 2004 Ford F-150 pickup (pic tured above), and the Ford Model U (concept pictured right). 2005. This year, the Ford Focus contin ues to be offered as a P Z E V - meeting California's stringent partial zero emissions standard without compro mising the vehicle's performance, fun-to-drive character or economy. The Focus PZEV . powered by a new 2.3-liter 1-4 engine, is the stan dard engine for all California, New York. Vermont and Massachusetts Focus models. The engine is available for the 2004 model year on all nonS V T Ford Focus models in the United States. In addition to these production vehicles. Ford continues to pioneer new technologies with several advanced research efforts, including: Diesel-powered light-duty vehi cles are being developed and tested, as Ford studies plans to offer a dieselpowered Ford Focus for sale in North America in the future. Diesel technol ogy offers advantages in fuel efficien cy in the range of 25 percent to 30 percent over a gasoline vehicle. This fuel economy improvement translates into a 20 percent to 25 percent reduc tion in C 02 emissions. The Ford Focus Fuel Cell Vehicle is undergoing fleet testing in the United States and Canada. The hydro gen-powered fleet is part of a threeyear program designed to test fuel cell vehicles in real-world applica tions. The goals of the program include technology testing, driver acceptance evaluation, evaluating comfort with hydrogen fueling and educating the public on the benefits of and challenges posed by the intro duction of fuel cell vehicles. The Ford Focus FC V produces zero emissions, and fuel-cell technology is projected to provide up to two times the fuel economy of gasoline and diesel engines. The Ford Model U concept has the world's first supercharged internal combustion engine (IC E ) optimized to run on hydrogen fuel. The research project is viewed as a stepping stone to hydrogen-fueled mass transporta tion that eventually w ill incorporate fuel cells. Much like a diesel engine, the hydrogen IC E can reach an efficiency that is approximately 25 percent bet ter than a gasoline engine. ^ o n r O n t a r io F o rd D e a le rs P r e s e n t F5 at M 1 The G re a t I Where the spark comes from Vb Intake valve Spark plug Exhaust · valve _L-f f i Event Spark plug ignites air/fuel mixture 2003 lord I Of(IK Your engine requires an `ignitor' to set off the explosion of air and gasoline that produces power to move your vehicle.
