Walk for Dog Guides on Sunday The Purina Walk for Dog Guides, a five-kilometre charity walk to raise funds for the Lions Foundation of Canada, will be held on Sunday Oct. 3. The walk will begin at the Lions Foundation of Canada. 152 Wilson St., at 11 a.m. Registration begins at 10 a.m. Sponsor sheets can be picked up at locations across town. To pledge online, visit www.dogguides.com. The event is hosted by the Lions Foundation o f Canada, the Oakville Lions Club and the Friends of the Lions Foundation of Canada. The Oakville walk, one of the orga nization's largest, is one of several being held across Canada. This year's national fundraising goal is $600,000. All proceeds from the event will ben efit the foundation's three programs: Canine Vision Canada that provides dog guides to the blind and visually impaired, Special Skills Dogs of Canada for the physically disabled and m edically-at-risk, and Hearing Ear Dogs of Canada for the deaf and hardof-hearing. Dog guides are provided across Canada at no charge to the recipients. The Lions Foundation of Canada operates a unique facility where dog guides are trained and ultimately matched to meet a recipient's needs. It is the only dog guide school of its kind in North America. The Lions Foundation of Canada was founded in 1983. Since then, the lives of more than 700 men. women and children aged 8-84 have received spe cially trained dog guides. The Lions Foundation of Canada is supported by corporations, businesses, service clubs and individuals. It receives no government support. The dogs are donated as puppies from reputable breeders or are bred at the foundation's kennel in Breslau, Ont. The puppies live in "foster homes' for a socializing period of one year and then return to the school to be screened for physical soundness and temperament before entering the training program. After a dog completes the 6-8 month training program, a successful applicant will stay at the training facility for 10-26 days to work with the dog and establish a bond needed for the team to succeed. It costs $19,000 to $25,000 to suc cessfully train a dog from the time it is a puppy to the time of graduation. For more information, call the Lions Foundation at 905-842-2891.
