The Oakville Beaver Weekend, Saturday December 6, 2003 - 27 Halton gets thumbs up for seniors service Halton Region is thrilled to have been award ed full accreditation status by the Canadian Council on Health Services Accreditation (CCHSA). This accreditation is particularly significant as Halton's Supportive Housing Programs and Adult Day Programs were included along with the Allendale Long Term Care facility, which is locat ed in Milton and is operated by Halton Region. 'T h e accreditation process, involving a review by an independent monitoring organization, demonstrates that Halton's services for seniors programs are high quality, and I am very pleased that our assessment of our services has been rec ognized by others," said A delina Urbanski. Halton's commissioner o f social and community services. Accreditation is part of services for seniors' ongoing quality management program. It is a vol untary process in which independent, trained sur veyors review the Region's services and facilities, evaluating them against national standards. The surveyors spent three days with Halton Region staff in late September. They toured the Region's facilities and interviewed management, staff, members o f regional council as well as res idents, clients and community partners. Halton's services for seniors division scored very well in the areas of responsiveness and client/community focus. The respiratory therapist works with patients on a one-on-one basis to introduce and educate them about their oxygen requirements. After assessing the p atient's needs and m obility requirements, the therapist develops a personal treatment plan for each patient and assists with the necessary paperw ork for funding and renewals. The home oxygen therapist continues to follow-up with the patient every three months. "The therapist tries to match the mobility and portability requirements of the patient's lifestyle to the type o f oxygen containment products," explains Ellen Ireland, M anager o f the C ardiorespiratory D epartm ent at Halton Healthcare. "Their needs depend on how often and how long they are away from home. There is an exten sive range o f home healthcare products ranging from oxygen cylinders on carts to even more portable systems. We try to make it as easy as possible for the patient. "We have had an excellent working relation ship with Ludlow Medical and together we have been providing home oxygen services for approximately six years. "It's a great partnership which provides a client focused care." For Groen. it's literally a breath of fresh air. "I could breathe again -- and the portable tank meant that 1 was mobile -- a free spirit once again. It was like having a huge weight lifted off my shoulders. Now I can hang out with my grandkids at the park or go to the mall." Provided by Zita Taksas-Raponi, communica tions officer, OTMH.
