Hotel evacuated after carbon monoxide leak Two people -- a woman and her seven-year-old daughter -- taken to hospital by Michael Gregory Oakville Beaver Staff 3 | Thursday, January 15, 2015 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com The Staybridge Suites in Oakville was evacuated for several hours Wednesday morning after a carbon monoxide (CO) leak that sent a mother and her young daughter to hospital with non-lifethreatening injuries. The incident occurred at the hotel at 2511 Wyecroft Rd., near Bronte Road and the QEW , at approximately 7:30 a.m. Halton Paramedic Services Supt. Brian Franks said a woman and her seven-year-old daughter were transported to Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital (OTMH) with non life-threatening injuries after showing signs of CO poisoning. Oakville Fire Platoon Chief Bill Forbes confirmed to the Oakville Beaver, shortly after 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, CO levels had returned to normal levels after earlier readings were as high as 60 to 80 parts per million (ppm). Normal levels for CO readings are closer to 20 ppm, Forbes said. "Our main concern was people and making sure everyone is safe and making sure the readings are safe in the building," Forbes said. The gas boilers in the mechanical room and the heater on roof were both shut off while Union Gas and the Technical Standards and Safety Authority (TSSA), a public safety branch of the Province, checked the equipment to determine Oakville Fire and emergency crews were on the scene at the Staybridge Suites on Wyecroft Road, at Bronte Road, Wednesday morning, after the hotel was evacuated for a carbon monoxide leak. | photo by Eric Riehl Oakville Beaver (Follow on Twitter @halton_photog or facebook.com/HaltonPhotog) what needed repairing. TSSA spokesperson Lynn Ramsay said an inspector on scene determined the source of the leak was from a water heater located in the mechanical room. Forbes said the woman and her daughter were staying on second floor, above where the leak occurred, and CO readings in their hotel room had reached 900 ppm. Both the woman and her child were treated and released from hospital later in the day. As Oakville Fire remained on scene Wednesday, guests were invited to keep warm at the Halton Regional Centre where they were treated to light refreshments. "Given our proximity to the hotel and our ability to provide certain services, we decided that we would have them here right at the Region," said Commissioner of Social and Community Services Sheldon Wolfson. Vern Kaye and his wife were two hotel patrons that sought shelter at the Region's headquarters on Bronte Road. The couple has been staying at Staybridge Suites for the past year after their home in Mississauga's Clarkson Village neighbourhood suffered extensive flood damage. Kaye said they woke up as usual around 6 a.m. to go downstairs for breakfast when his wife told him she wasn't feeling well. "My wife mentioned that when she woke up this morning she had a headache," Kaye said. "I felt tired so I went back to the room (after breakfast) and laid down, and fell asleep." It was a short while later when there was a knock on the couple's door on the fifth floor and a firefighter told them they had to evacuate the building. "We quickly got dressed and went downstairs It was full of firemen... EMS... and the hotel lobby was full of the employees all gathered behind the desk and they said we had to leave the hotel," Kaye said. see Halton on p.20 January 12th - February 12th Award Winning Italian Cuisine Private Dining · Corporate Functions · Family Events Taste of Clarkson 905 822 5751 www.michaelsbackdoor.com 1715 Lakeshore Road West COMPLIMENTARY TEETH WHITENING* Dr. Vanessa Milich & Associates Family Dental Care Encouraging Healthy and Happy Smiles Queensbury Dental Caring for Oakville Families for 10 years Welcoming New Patients Evening and Saturday Appointments 905.849.8449 Dundas St. Oakmead n Trafalgar Rd.
