The club took an opportunity to thank its legion of volunteers last Thursday at Town Hall, hold ing a wine and cheese evening that was attended by Ontario Minister of Tourism and Recreation Jim Bradley and Oakville MPP Kevin Flynn. Several long-time volunteers were recognized in particular for their contributions, including Kathy Punnett, Lina Giomo, Phil Iafrati and George Stoberman. Punnett received the Jim Tomkin Award as the club's sportsperson of the year, while Giomo was presented with the President's Award as volunteer of the year. Iafrati and Stoberman, the only coaches in club history to win two national championships each, received awards of recogni tion from the Province of Ontario. "We have probably close to 1,800 volunteers to run our club," said OSC president Jennifer Doleman. "In this time and day, and in this society, it's a challenge, but people give a lot." In a prepared speech, Bradley commended Oakville's volunteers and recognized the club for its recent success, congratulating the Blue Stars under-14 boys team for winning a national title last month. "Thanks to your tireless efforts and contributions throughout the years, the Oakville Soccer Club has become one of the most rec ognized and respected soccer clubs not just in Ontario, but in all of Canada," Bradley said. "You help our communities achieve real and positive change to help Ontario to be a strong, healthy and prosperous place in which to reside." in her first game for Canada Lang and Cicchini also on team By Norm Nelson B E A V E R S P O R T S E D IT O R It didn't take long for D eanna E v errett. the latest Oakville addition to a Canadian national women's soccer team, to have an impact. Chances are Everrett, who will turn 17 next month, will not get home sick in her first internation al trip with the national team. After all, she has two fellow Oakville natives on the team -- A m anda Cicchini and K ara Lang, both o f whom were on for the entire two games against Russia. Lang, o f course, is the veteran not just among the Oakville contingent, but among the Canadian team. The 18-year-old now boasts 26 caps for the national U-19 team, scoring 10 goals. In addition, she has been a fixture on the national women's team for the past couple of years with 43 caps, scoring 21 goals. Lang was a well publi cized phenom when she broke in with both national teams, earning her first U19 cap back in June, 2001 (as a 14-year-old) and with the national women's team back in March, 2002 (as a 15-year-old).
