Stoney Creek's Kayla Vespa opened the scoring 3:31 into the game -- snapping Cece's shutout streak at 103 minutes -- but Oakville's Olivia Atkinson tied the contest before the six-minute mark. Field scored midway through the third period to put the Hornets up 2-1, then added an empty-netter with 12 seconds remaining in regulation. Oakville has now held its opposition to one goal or less in five of its last six games. The Hornets (25-2-2) will visit Barrie Saturday and Durham West Sunday. They are not scheduled to play at home again until Friday, Jan. 30, when they host Brampton. The Oakville Hornets midget house league Cheerios had smiles all round after winning gold at the recent Peterborough Ice Kats girls' hockey tournament. Gillian Macdonald (five goals), Erin Federovich (four), Tristan Hutchinson (two), Katherine Slattery (two) and Arielle Rodrigues scored for Oakville in the tournament, with Kylie Fellows, Amanda Morielli and Drishka Kureemun among those drawing assists. The defence corps of Gaby Dabos, Meghan Teague, Grace McGladrey, Emily Fellows, Emma Gigeris and Caitlin Fellows helped goaltender Mary Nicholl record a 0.80 goals-against average and two shutouts in the tournament. Macdonald was named the Cheerios' MVP in two of the games, with Federovich, Emily Rose Jameson and Nicholl each earning the honours once. Stu Nicholl, Steve Fellows and Bob Bell coach the team, Alison Macdonald and Jenn McGladrey are trainers, and Vanessa Federovich is the manager. Local trio helps 17U Pakmen to volleyball golds The 17-under Mississauga Pakmen Gold girls' team, which features three Oakville high school students, won its fourth Ontario Volleyball Association tournament title of the season last weekend at Brock University in St. Catharines. The previous weekend, Mississauga defeated Niagara Rapids 18U 25-19, 25-17 in the final of a tournament in Hamilton. The Pakmen 17U squad has reached the final of all five OVA tournaments it has competed in this year, claiming four gold and a silver. The Oakville Thunder 15U blue team won gold at the Challenge Cup volleyball tournament recently in Markham. Oakville defeated the Leaside Lightning 15U team 23-25, 25-21, 15-5 in the final, the Thunder's fifth win in as many games that day. Oakville advanced to the title game with a straight-set victory over the Georgetown Impact in the semifinals. The Thunder's win advanced the team to the premier division for its next 15U tournament. Members of the Oakville squad are Leah Holden, Emily Semplonius, Cady Bishop, Ivy Gibson, Alisa Ermarkaryan, Nicole Hopper, Talia Loreti, Daniela Luna, Alexandra Kinkartz and Maddie Watson. OSC U17 boys win flight in Pennsylvania The Oakville Soccer Club's boys' under-17 A team won all three of its games to finish first in the top flight at last month's Pennsylvania Classic. Oakville outscored its opposition 7-1 in the three games to beat out the other two brackets in the top flight of the tournament, which attracted more than 40 U17 squads. Members of the team are Stefano Anastasio, Dani Aguiar, Malik Arab, Daniel Ribeiro de Abreu, Michael Costanzo, Lorenzo Podda, Nicholai Bacusmo, Frank Bosco, Matthew Menko, Seihun Kim, Liam Murphy, Borna Juracic, Michael Pupulin, Aleksa Golubovic, Dusan Kovacevic, Quintin McCleary, Aidan Wood and Nader Ghabbour.
