"The Association decided to start a class in Oakville because we always gets requests for steel drum bands to perform at concerts, weddings and local events and we always have to send them to Toronto. The need was definitely there," said Guyana-born Veronica Tyrrell, President of the CCAH. Though the class size is relatively small with T only 10 students. Tyrrell hopes that with the exposure of the group at vari ous events, it might gain interest. She expects that the fundraising Christmas concert on Dec. 12 at the River Oaks Recreation Centre will do just that. Though the association recently received a $3,200 grant through the Town of Oakville and Oakville Arts Council, Tyrrell said it's not enough. Each steel pan costs between $500 $700 and in order to expand the class es, more funds would be needed.
